'cause I'm seriously impressed with it. This game wasn't on my radar at all, and Mr. Escapist I only looked into it because of the ads on this site. And fuck me with a chicken if I ain't glad I did!

I've never played a Ghost game before and the last grrr grim shoot'em up game I played was Call of Duty 4, but I'm in to Wildland. Its like Just Cause, in that you're destabilizing a latin american country, but this time instead of a legit Gov you're fucking with a cartel that's boss in all but name. And there's an air of...camp to it. Sure you're gunning down Doctors-turned-Cartel-Torturers that'd make the Night Lords proud in their human skin filled hunting cabin while they fuck on corpses, but you halo jumped in there, kicked a guy in the nuts, stole a minigun armed truck, and basically went full Archer.

I wasn't expecting a character customization, but sure, works for me. I've heard you can edit the look of the squad you get, but I haven't found the option yet. Really would like to make one of them a sassy black girl in a gasmask, but alas...
And its nice to change camo depending on the environment.

Speaking of, the map. Oh fuck me raw its HUGE! Like...3 times the size of the Shadow of Mordor map, both combined. I was at my tactical map looking over the 'starting' area thinking 'Oh sure, this is good enough' but it was only one of like 12 maps in total. Seriously I'm going to be playing this one for awhile!

Gameplay wise took me a little getting used to, kinda' like a Souls games. Not that its Souls like, but the controls/gameplay takes some adjustment before you're comfortable. Don't ask me how many times I mucked up the ambush by throwing a grenade instead of shifting camera shoulder position.
But I got used to almost all of it. Still haven't managed to pilot a plane for longer than 10 seconds before it crashes. Plane controls are wonky. Also the gun helicopters REALLY need a crosshair. Haven't even hit the ground yet!

The AI is a little stiff. The squad itself is kinda' useless. I've done entire missions while they just wait around, even after I've ordered them to my or to open fire. They're good in cars, 'cause you can order them to waste them tangos. And the enemies are a little too good at spotting a ghillie suit covered, face painted, black camo-ed, at night in pitch darkness Ghost operator.

Also get a sniper rifle! It's your best friend!
I recommend this game!

One, it is not like any Ghost Recon I have played before. Gameplay wise, this feels like a much improved sequel to The Division (if it was called The Division 2, Id believe it, though its not meant to be MMOsuperlite)

This game is weird on what you can and cant to and what does and doesnt happen. You cant jump but you can climb alot of stuff. I basically scaled the side of a mountain once by spamming A. (On Xbox)

The map really is huge. But whether thats good depends on how much you like -trying- to 100% a game. Most people wont even finish 30% of the map, even if they like it, Im sure. Though the whole map is automatically open to you, which I did not realize right away, since the first area has a border lined with guard towers in a "This is the edge of the game" sort of way...but nope, you can go past that and beyond.

This is a game best played with friends though. The AI squad you get is derpy, and they mostly feel like they are just meant to revive you (but only once per fight). My brother and I have been playing together and us two is better than me and 3 AI. Also we like doing slightly more realistic sniping, with one of us spotting, the other sniping.

And yes...get a sniper rifle, it is your best friend.

It is some excellent fun.

I find the sniper to be my 'for special cases' tool though, so I don't endorse it with them same enthusiasm. Its only even worth using if you're being assaulted by vehicles or more then 300-400m away from the guy you wanna shoot. Anything under 400m is easily sniped with your assault rifle without the snoozey rate of fire.

But yeah, it is ridiculously fun. I play with someone who is not a huge fan of stealth at all times, and it often times plays out in a dumb 'I'm going to go there. If you manage to keep anyone from spotting me then stealth with be retained. If not, me and my lmg have a date with everyone in the village.' That's another plus. There's very few missions that are tasked with the ol' instafail levels of stealth. If you fuck it up, you fuck it up and get to play that out.

The machine guns with silencers are pretty universal. Still I like the rifle for cleaning up the enemy camps before moving in.

Also the drones are amazing for sneaky work. Tag all the enemies so you don't walk into kill zones.
But even so it's fun to fight your way out of a fubar situation.

And have you been able to land a plane? Just trying to turn the Damn thing sends it careening into the ground

The planes and helicopters lack banking controls. Once you get used to that, they're fine. They're actually excessively arcade once you get your head around the simplistic control set. Like, can mess around directly above a base with 2 sam sites without risk levels of nonsense.

Protip: HT1 with a long barrel and no silencer + 1 point in vehicle damage perk can 1 hit helicopters. Max out that perk and it can 1 hit most vehicles in the game. Frees up having to have the fiddly underbarrel launcher on your AR.

Once I worked through some of the technical issues I had (surprisingly not involving framerate for once) I was having the time of my life. I'm actually not disappointed in an Ubisoft game, which hasn't happened since...Far Cry 3 I think.

The co-op mode is what did it for me though, honestly. If it didn't have that, I would have just likely waited a few months for a sale, but the addition has so far made the game very enjoyable.

I'm not sure why they bothered with giving the characters personality though (if you can even call it that). I guess it's okay when playing solo, but playing with other live people just makes it kind of awkward. The worst part is, dialouge between the characters isn't synced, so whatever one player will hear isn't what the others will hear, assuming they get to hear anything at all. So even if the jokes were funny, only one of your group would be laughing.

Besides, you can customize the characters and I'd imagine most people in co op would want to create their own jokes and fun, not what the game is telling them is funny.

Other than that though, total blast so far. My brother and I cranked it up on the highest difficulty and have been playing with just the two of us and it's been a bit of a challenge, but sometimes can be a bit easy still.

Unfortunately it wouldn't even run properly on my brother's PC until I gave him one of my SSDs. The game would freeze for 3 seconds everytime the game autosaved (which ostensibly it does AFTER EVERY SINGLE KILL). But I'm surprised the game runs so well on the aging 780ti with the settings he is using. Not quite always 60, but the game holds up well.

I'm gonna have to get some friends to play with me. The AI squad is pathetic.

Do it! It's waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better when you play with friends and plan your attacks. Moments when everything goes to hell and you have to improvise, are priceless! Also, this games is sooo gooooood damn beatiful!

I'm liking it, but I have to play by myself because I play on the hardest difficulty, which treats the GTA, Saints Row and Just Cause players (who make up 95% of the game's population) like a cheap hooker in GTA; it fucks'em, kicks their ass for the money back, and then backs over their body and drives off.

Im am still having some issues with what mindset is the best for it, as a fan of the old Ghost Recon games this one seems like a huge miss, the player character moves extremely fast, the squad commands are very basic and the enemy AI is rampant without any sense of tactics, just simply running from a place to another while dumping bullets into you (it doesnt seem like they reload, they just keep on shooting with very short stops).
I quickly realised that my teammates werent going to help me feel like it was a tactical game with how they pranced around enemy bases so I just ordered them to wait somewhere while I went alone. The stealth was rather lackluster, the enemies are very dumb and rather blind, so even in harder difficulties I could kill everyone without raising the alarm very easily.

So I tried playing it as a Mercenaries games, since I feel that its closer to that then Just Cause.

It works better like that, just send your team to a spot that can somewhat cover you and cause mayhem while you run around shooting everyone without a supressor. Fuck stealth and just get as much attention as you can (the enemies are still blind and deaf, a base will still remain unnalerted even if you killed plenty of guys with unsilenced weapons).

Still, it all feels rather limited since there arent tanks, rocket launchers, or anything more interesting then a slightly more armored dude or a annoying as fuck enemy helicopter.

So yeah, play it as you want, its not like there is a "right way" but in my opinion I am finding the game better when more focused on the more arcade aspect of it (even in harder difficulties) since the game is more directed that way.
But I do find it that plenty of mechanics dont go so well together, for example, the enemies are very accurate and fast to aim at you, for a game that doesnt have leaning that means that everytime you want to shoot anyone while under fire you will certainly get hit even if the enemy is very far and just crazily spraying at you.

PS: The map is really amazing, the snow area is great, and honestly its very much worth it to visit the entire map even if its not needed to finish the game.

It's pretty OP with the sync-shots tbh.

Also the bugs oh god the bugs, this must honestly be the buggiest Ubisoft game I've ever played.
