Hi there. So yeah, I've got no money to spare and was curious if any of my fellow Escapists knew any fun games that I could play for free.

They could be pretty much any type of game, flash game, browser-based, or download and play.

The only conditions being that it's fun and free! :D (or possibly just "interesting" if not "fun")

Please try and shy away from free MMORPGs specifically. I know that there are a lot out there and there are tons that are both fun and free, but I don't really have the time to get heavily invested in an MMORPG. x3

You can still list them though, it's not like I'm stopping you from doing so. :p

Oh! Please give the genre of the game and whether it can be considered to be content complete totally free-to-play or if it's under a freemium business model where you can try out some parts for free and pay for the rest. While I would prefer just totally free games, freemium games still deserve a shot right? :D

If you want PVE its pretty fun. PVP though requires you to suspend all notion of fairness, and fork out a loooot of $ just to die a little slower. Just do everyone a favor and don't play as a Blademaster or Assassin. They already make up 90% of the fucking population.

Psychic is good. More Clerics are always needed. More Barbarians are needed too, but I feel sorry for anyone that actually plays as one these days.

I've played most of the classes, and prefer Mystic overwhelmingly though. Good at pretty much every kind of role in any kind of squad or solo. If you know what you are doing it can seem like a pretty OP class, unlike Assassin or BM which require you to buy the best gear and hit F1 every few seconds to auto attack 5 times per second (a feature never intended but they refuse to cap it to something not rediculous). Those classes also get easy stun locks (which they don;t even need).

Also another good free game is Tag. Seriously we should all go outside and play tag. Or just go outside...

Ultima IV and the first two Elder Scrolls games are also free now. Bit hard to play when you're used to modern mechanics but if the age doesn't bother you, you will lose hours of your life.
Not sure how much I'd recommend Elder Scrolls: Arena, though...

There was an absolutely fucking awesome game made by a guy called Darthlupi; The Cleaner. It's a side scroller with free-flying mechanics and various magic attacks you can use. The combat is incredibly satisfying and the flying feels amazing. The art is nice, too, very Another World/Flashback-y.

You should also try out Iji, which is a pretty fun side-scroller with a malleable plot that's influenced by your playstyle. No arbitrary, binary choices, the progression is dictated by how you play and what you actually do. The mechanics themselves are very solid, too.

There's a surprisingly fun Sonic fangame (don't judge me) called Eggman Hates Furries (DON'T JUDGE ME). It plays fairly differently to a typical Sonic game. The levels transition into each other naturally, with no zone names or loading times or anything. There are no lives, if you die, you simply restart at the beginning of the obstacle (checkpoints are very generous) and there are no enemies except bosses. There's platforming, but it's mostly just dodging obstacles until the boss. The bosses are incredible, too. High speed, challenging, full of EXPLOSIONS, many of them are better than any of the bosses in the main series. There's an opening narration in the opening, with a really dramatic rainy scene which'll probably make you think "oh, great, a typical grimdark Sonic fanfic" but it doesn't stay that way. Trust me.

Yahtzee's games are pretty good, too.

Team Fortress 2. Obviously. Because it's a great game.

Also, World of Tanks. It's an arena based combat game with realistic combat. If you can get around that poor matchmaking and grind, it's an enjoyable experience.

Silver Knights. It's a 3D giant robot fighting game that's been in "development" for the better part of a decade now, but it's a lot of fun. There's no story mode (just skirmishes vs the comp), only LAN for multiplayer options, and the controls are slightly unwieldy, but each robot is very different, it's pretty deep for what it is, and once you figure things out, it's a great time. If you can miraculously get enough people for this in multiplayer (it handles up to 6), it's excellent.

You could try Dead Frontier, if you aren't sick to death of zombies

It's a free browser based zombie MMO that doesn't make you buy shit.

Otherwise armorgames.com would be a good idea to visit.

Team Fortress 2 most definitely. It does have a store in which you can buy weapons and hats with real money. BUT, you can get nearly all of the stuff in there as free drops if you play the game.

Velociraptor Safari! You have a jeep, you run over velociraptors, you...okay, that's about it. But it's a lovely 3D Unity engine giggle:

Tribes: Ascend (fps), Blacklight Retribution(fps), Vindictus (hack and slash? RPG-thing?) (if you can get a group together).

Tribes uses an unlock system, where you can play or pay to unlock. You can unlock everything this way, and you start with 3 classes.

Blacklight is a little weird. You rent guns for the day, or use in game gold to buy gun parts to build your own. The rent is fairly cheap too. One well played game will net you a better gun for the day (or two/three crap games). It actually works pretty well.

Vindictus as far as i can tell is mostly a cosmetic shop. I don't recall any weapon or armor sales that i found. The game can get a bit grindy tho and isn't all that fun in single player.

There's also League of Legends if your into the whole MOBA thing but I expect you already knew that :p

I also know that you said try to avoid MMO's but you might want to try to get into the Raiderz beta. I don't like hotkey mmos, but it has a more action oriented system more in the vein of Tera or GW2 (as far as I can tell, haven't played those myself). So this one is pretty fun.

Edit: My gf also said to say Dungeon Fighter Online and Puzzle Pirates (side scrolling online beat-em up and puzzle respectively).

It's getting to the point where you can play most genres ftp isn't it?

How about awesome free single player? Look up WingCommander Saga. It is a free stand alone mod for the Freespace 2 engine. You don't need Freespace 2 to run it either.

Captcha: very nice

Yes Captcha it is...

If I am honest, then I can say all my PC games are fun free games. I would suggest TF2 considering it is now free-to-play and is still being managed, updated, and fixed by Valve. A good deal so far.

Oh man so many things...
Cave Story(basic version is still free), TF2, Tribes Ascend, Super Monday Night Combat, World of Tanks, Age of Empires Online, Dragon Age Journeys, League of Legends, Battle Forge (card based RTS, sounds strange but it is wonderful to play),...

There are two quite recent additions to the F2P market but I can't for the life of me remember what they are.
Edit: Now I found it, first is Blacklight Retribution, a sci-fi take on the CoD multiplayer formula with more unlocks then your anus can handle, all for free.

Any flash game made by jmtb02,who posts all of his games on Armor Games. Ever hear of Ball Revamped? Him. Exit Path? Him. If you want to install something, give Team Fortress 2,Blacklight:Retribution,or Tribes:Ascend a whirl.
