Studio Ghibli's latest film, the manga-based From up on Poppy Hill, is coming out in the US next March. Where I live it came out in September already, and I've seen it. Thinking that most of The Escapist's members are from the US, and the forum has its fair share of anime fans, I would like to know if anyone's looking forward to it? New Studio Ghibli films are a pretty big deal in anime circles, and they're usually not ignored by mainstream critics either. Goro Miyazaki is the director, while Hayao Miyazaki has written the screenplay.

So are you looking forward to it? What are you expecting?

I'm looking forward to it. I enjoy Ghibli films, especially in theaters. I saw Arrietty by myself, I was surrounded by kids who really got into it, and I thought it was fun. Definitely curious to seeing who this movie will attract. Seeing how From Up on Poppy Hill isn't a fantasy movie, I'm expecting a cute little slice of life movie.

Now that I've heard of it, sure. But I've never heard of "From up on Poppy Hill"...

Oh yeah I remember reading about this some time ago... it's the one directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son? I'm not sure what I think of it. I'd love to see Hayao back in action after Ponyo. This seems the next best thing though.

You know you could of posted the trailer of it (I competely forgot that a trailer would of been out now). I will do it for you-

Either way I will be looking forward to it well mostly (it's directed by his son who did Tales from Earthsea). From the look of the trailer, it remind me of their earlier works (Totoro and Whisper of the Heart) due to the setting.

Goro isn't the best director, I'm afraid. *points to Tales from Earthsea*

But then every Ghibli movie not directed by Hayao Miyazaki falls short by comparison. And he may have written the screenplay, but unfortunately Hayao isn't the best writer. It's mostly his exquist directing and animation chops that bring his movies to life and drives most of the narrative. He's brilliant at visual storytelling, but actual writting...?

So no, I'm not particularly looking forward to this movie. I don't know why Miyazaki's son is being pushed to take over the reigns when doesn't really seem to have it in him. It's obvious Hayao Miyazaki knows he's getting too old to take on full movies, and he wants someone to take his place as soon as possible.

Yeah, I coulda linked the trailer at least.

Honestly I'm quite surprised that so few knew about this film. But it's understandable. Anime films, even the biggest ones rarely get advertised anywhere outside of Japan.

Yeah, the setting is pretty nostalgic. I haven't seen Whisper of the Heart, but FUOPH is somewhat reminiscient of Totoro also. It's a bit different from most Ghibli films that it takes place completely in the real world and doesn't have even the slightest hint of anything supernatural.

You really need to watch the rest of the Studio Ghibli films since Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday were real world setting but contain no supernatural elements at all (they subsitude it by Whipser of the Heart had fantasy element from the main character written story while Only Yesterday has alot of flashbacks from the main character childhood).

Wouldn't want to sound nitpicky, but in saying "most Ghibli films" I referred to the fact that the majority of Ghibli films do feature supernatural or fantastical elements. I'm very much aware that some of their films do not.

And while I looked up studio Ghibli on Wikipedia, I noticed their upcoming film The Wind rises, and it immediately became one of my top anticipated movies of the near future. With Hayao Miyazaki directing and writing and Joe Hisaishi doing the score we're bound to get something great.

I don't know enough about the film to say if I'm going to see it or not, but it's a Ghibli film, so I'm curious at least.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I don't know, it looks more story driven than most of the recent Ghibli films but all of them also had less and less of a story to them, guess Ill see it just because when it comes out.

No, I'm not excited. I'm too busy figuring out who's responsible that I didn't know about this and punishing that person.

Googling more information as I type this infact...
I'll have to echo these posts. I am almost disgusted with myself for not knowing about it sooner.

I really have to echo that every Ghibli fan *has* to see both Whispers of the Heart and Only Yesterday.
Both are amazing.
An oddly quiet, not-earth-shattering amazing.

Yep, I won't be sleeping tonight.
My heads filled with excitement and dreams, also fear, the prospects scares me though.
After Tales from Earthsea I'm dubious but still excited.

Really wish Ghibli would do more action oriented films, I know there is Mononoke and you might count Nausicaa but I really want a fully fledged action movie from them.
