Looking to get back into DnD after a long hiatus, and since I don't have any interest among my friends group I was wondering how exactly to find a group to play with over the net and whether the experience was considered worthwhile.

My roommate plays World of Darkness over Skype. Since he's in the military, I think they were all local at one point and decided to continue the game over Skype so the group wouldn't break up.

It may be easier to find a local group at your local gaming store.

If you're going to play, I strongly recommend trying out Roll20 for your group:
http://roll20.net/

It's basically an online, virtual tabletop. However, and this may be of interest to you, they have an LFG section if you're looking for a game to either host or join:

I've also used maptools with great success in the past (roll20 did not exist then) but it's a little more work to sort of get going and understand. Though, it's more flexible IMO once you understand all of that. That being said, I found the program just less useable and a bit buggier than Roll20 in general.

Long story short: online play totally works and is a lot of fun.
My group was just a bunch of internet friends I knew.
