I was reading about Portal 2 on Wikipedia this morning, and the article made mention of a scrapped game mode called 'Speedball'. From what I could gather, this game was to involve the use of portals to manoeuvre a sphere of some kind around the playing field with the aim of either bringing it to your team's area [like capture the flag] or your opponents' [like rugby or American football].

Does anybody else find this idea really cool? The VALVe team found that matches quickly devolved into chaos, but I'm sure the game could be tweaked to keep it more consistent. For example, the inability to pick up the object for any longer than, say.. three seconds.
I can see this game being great with three players to a side, a large room and some obstacles.
I like the idea of passing the ball around using Portals, or 'tackling' other players by making them shoot out of a wall or a ceiling. It would require some degree of team-coordination, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Perhaps it will be released as an expansion, or a mod..

Thoughts?

hahah i just imagined dropping a player or two through the floor and letting them plummet to their Deaths, which could have been the reason it got scrapped, you would definitely need some kind of fall resistance. Sounds fun!

No killing. I forgot to mention that. Maybe a moment of incapacitation if you have fallen from the ceiling, but no permanent death.
Chell has those kangaroo leg-braces anyway, and I presume the robots have something similar as well.

Eh. It might be fun, but not something I would keep coming back to to play more of. Also, it's not very Portal-y, IMO.

Hm. I thought this would garner more interest. Enough to sway Valve into releasing it, perhaps, though that may have been a pipe dream..
