According to the makers of dead space, it was "to scary" for the player base, yeah, no, dont think so EA, yes it made me jump, but i was never scared. Seriously though, what the hell do you expect when playing a horror game? that its gonna be puppies and sunshine and rainbows? no! you expect a grim, foreboding atmosphere with death round the corner! if you dont expect it, why else would you play it?

Let's make a survival horror game ... and remove the horror.

Although, to be fair, if you took lots of LSD and played it in the dark i'm pretty sure there would be something scary in there somewhere.

It wasn't exactly what i'd call scary.

Source? Please? Considering you don't even mention "the makers of Dead Space", you mention EA. So I'd like to know where you're getting your information that Visceral Games believes their series was "too scary".

Unless this is just another thinly-veiled EA-hate thread. In which case, keep up the good work, Internet.

I notice you have an avatar of a Kakapo, good on you! On topic, people mostly weren't scared...mostly.

He was innacurate in saying that the "makers" of Dead Space said this, but EA reportedly DID:

Here's an Escapist article on it. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118616-EA-Dead-Space-Too-Scary-to-Handle-Alone?]

I never found Dead Space all that scary, it could get pretty tense but I never got to a point where I found myself struggling to press on like I did with Amnesia or the early Silent Hills. I did, however, find DS 1 and 2 to be enjoyable and this game looks to be much less my size and, I'm guessing, I'm not the only one. There are already enough standard third person shooters around, frankly we're a bit spoiled for choice.

Thanks for the source, I must have missed that article.

I wasn't aware that this was really news to people who had already seen EA claim they wanted to "broaden the appeal" and that they wanted Dead Space to sell 5 million copies, though? Yeah, EA is pretty stupid and treat the developers they absorb horribly. I think The Escapist has established that by now.

Honestly thank goodness for EA, I mean we wouldn't want people to be actually scared of something in a video game!

It's a slippery slope! Next people will want relatable characters and other emotions impacted!

No, that's not what EA said. EA said that due to the game's scariness, some people would prefer to play it with someone else to try to alleviate that. Pretty much like watching a horror movie with someone else. People are getting this from one stupid headline.

Here's [http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/ea-never-called-dead-space-too-scary-but-the-misleading-headlines-are-the-s] a Penny Arcade Report article on the matter.

This is why you have to read the article, and not just the headline.

I'm currently in the Morgue, in Amnesia.
Fuck you, EA, Dead Space only made me flinch, I've spent the last week or so sitting in the corner of the level and crying.

Jim Stirling has made a replay article to the PA one. http://www.destructoid.com/ea-thinks-dead-space-was-too-scary-to-be-single-player-231710.phtml

Destructiod comments section is having a field day, lol EA are such retards.

From what I understand dismemberment has been removed aswell. Anyone care to tell me why I should buy this game? cos jump scares and dismemberment were the main hooks of the series

Where exacty did you hear this? Because there is absolutely 0.01% chance that there won't be dismemberment. It's the mechanic the entire series was founded on. It would be like taking bullet time out of Max Payne.

Seriously, don't just make shit up because you wanna dump on EA.

If I remember correctly, that quote was given as one of the (many) explanations as to why they added co-op to the game. The completely optional co-op that you can forgo completely and go back to playing Isaac solo, unlike RE5.

If this game is so scary you want 2 people playing it, I'm going to need about 97 more jump-scares, because that's the only "scary" part of the game. But not really.

"Too." The word is "too."

All that said, I agree, assuming you're talking about the co-op addition that is meant to "make the player more comfortable." I'm playing a horror game, I don't want to be comfortable.

Eh, I never played it, but I watched a stream of someone who apparently has never seen a horror movie because he jumped at every little thing. It's not nearly as scary as people say. :\

I read the article, it still defeats the point of a Horror game.
An interactive medium is different than a movie, you can converse and cover each others backs, whilst you have no control over a film.

Horror games are to niche for EA. They only want games they can sell to billions of people.
Also what he said.

True, and the direction Dead Space 3 is taking is worrying (or would be, if I cared about the Dead Space series), but people are still fretting over something that wasn't even actually said.
