Someone explain to me the fun in said game series please.

Never played one obviously, instead I grew up with Half life and GTA games.

Turn based combat has a fairly strategic edge to it, unless you were as young as most of us when you started playing and just used tackle over and over again, there's a virtual pet aspect about catching and naming your own little critters, it's a J-RPG, technically, some people like those.

I could probably go on but I don't want to.

RPG where you raise a party, but you really feel like the character. Final Fantasy you raise a party but you don't feel like any of the characters. It's an adventure to explore the land, catch as many as you can, battle a lot of trainers, raise them to be strong. Play it, give it a shot. Hell, I'm gonna be replaying Pokemon Red for the original gameboy shortly, that's how much I like the games. There's endless amounts of reasons, give it a shot.

The musical soundtrack, always epic, and almost always the reason why I buy them.

Granted the balanced gameplay and strategy probably have something to do with it. And the Nostalgia. Now be quite and play some pokemons or Brock will wake up and steal it ;3

I have no idea but I love them. Really when you sit back and think about it, they just repackage the same game over and over again and we keep buying it. But at the end of the day I still love playing them for some odd reason.

Let's set aside that nostalgia for a second and just consider the gameplay. It's an RPG. I love RPG's and their strategy and their turn-based combat and even their grinding. You have every right to disagree. Yes, the franchise has been wrung out for profit, and I hate the concept of nearly-identical versions being released and then having an even superior third one come out a few monts later. But at heart, I'm just fond of the gameplay.

It also helps that pokemon was a cornerstone of my childhood, but that's another topic.

It's a lot deeper than it seems, with plenty of places to go. There's huge variety in enemies, the combat is tactical and tense, it's got a great aesthetic, charming music and visuals, it takes ages to finish so lots of things to do, it's well balanced, and it's got a good universe behind it.

Good enough?
indeed it was

Its highly strategic online (Plus the Pokemon themselves are cool)

All the different combinations of Teams, Items, Moves, as well as stats make it the most unique RPG series ever. Plus its still fun as hell (At least to me, and Im 16)

I can't explain it. Maybe its just the hope that one day I'll catch them all.

Yeah I never understood why people said "pearl and diamond were super cool and good!"
Pearl and Diamond don't exist.

Up to crystal the games were very fun, there was alot you could do and leveling wasn't difficult. You also had the incentive of collecting Pokemon and the world was kinda interesting considering the shit you could do. Truth be told I don't know if alot of the stuff I love about it are nostalgia based or whether it still counts as a good game. But like I said, anything past Crystal doesn't exist.

For me, it's the battling mechanics. They are far deeper than they first appear to be, and battling others who fully understand them is like a having a chess battle, except the pieces are little creatures.

I couldn't agree more. I played this basically from the point I got my Gameboy, at about age 11. I'm 15 now and it's too mindless, repetitive, and un-exciting as possible. Not boring, un-exciting.

All the same...

I still love those games. xD

The combination of RPG elements, turn-based strategy, and the collection of fighting creatures sounds appealing, but then again that could just be nostalgia injecting my spinal cord with dopamine.

Different appeal for different folks. Some people like the collection aspect, and others the battling (which as some have mentioned already gets more complicated than you'd think later on).

I have played through the first two generations, but sadly it's one of the only franchises I've ever felt awkward about pursuing further as I grew up (and this coming from a big Kingdom Hearts fan). In 2nd generation in particular, it's possible to play through with a different party with different moves and types every single time you play (in fact what I usually do is raise a party of 6 into an unbeatable fighting force instead of raising everything I catch). Not that they couldn't improve on that in the future and make more types available early of course. I'd like to see an online version with improved graphics.

I would say this Let's Play accurately captures some of the nice feelings you can get from Pokemon:

Lets not forget how obsessive we gamers can be about collecting things. Just finished collecting them all from the last generation? Here's a new generation with 100 more, have at em :p
