Arcades used to be a place where you could enjoy a more advanced gaming experience that required hardware too big to fit inside ones home, and I think that with all the new toys coming up on the market (VR, mocap, 3D view, etc) It could be brought back.

With the coming of the Occulus Rift and other immersive gaming hardware, does anyone else think it would be a great opportunity to reinvent the arcade?
You could have a big empty matressed room where a group of people could go inside and each put on a Occulus Rift, a map is created in the game that is the exact size of the room.
This way one could create countless types of interactive games such as deathmatch and zombie survival.

What, you people don't go to normal arcades anymore? Shame on you!

And why does it need to be reinvented?! Keep your grubby hands off my arcade!

My main issue with arcades is the money grabbing tactics employed by games, pulling dick moves on you so you end up paying out more to play further.

Arcades shouldn't be reinvented. Just be brought back to the countries that don't have them any more. These days the closest thing you can find to an arcade in many countries is an internet café, since everyone either has their own laptop, or wants to use a computer at such places. I believe arcades are still common enough in places like Japan though.

Arcades are fun. But they are designed to shake money out of you. So yeah most games will have unfair scenarios where its a very slim chance you will not die. Metal slug and its screen filled with bullets is one example. Or most light gun games where they put a civilian in a really awkward place :p

There are a couple of well balanced arcades, but not many.
