Are classic games getting a free ride?

I understand the appeal and love of classic games being myself a regular retro gamer; however I am concerned with the constant reoccurrence on top [insert number here] lists. They are inspirational games that are landmarks in the industry such as space invaders and pong but honestly if given the choice would you pick them over modern day counterparts, if so why do the reappear on such lists they could get an honourable mention. They are by today?s standards not the best and holding them as such due to their age in my eyes is unfair to modern titles.

Edit: If you misunderstand the post I apologise however the point I am question attempting to make is that is it right to count a game as great to play due to an effect it had in the past.

Argument for this?
(Edit): Sorry I posted before there was text.
I agree in some respects, like we'll accept certain games out of nostalgia but some games like pacman, tetris, and Super Mario bros actually deserve the praise they received and still get to this day.

I understand not what you not say?

Edit: My appologies on the early post I thought you meant to refer to the title. Well yes and no. Older games truly do deserve that mention such as tetris because I still play tetris regularly. Classic games just work, they are simple and not overly complicated and truly succeed at being "casual" gaming. They are perfect examples that you dont need flashy graphics to have a good game.

A... free ride?
In context to what? Do they get free bus passes, or something?

Not on my watch!
If you wanna ride the bus, you gotta pay, and it doesn't matter who you are.
But seriously (no text) is not a very good explanation, nor a convincing argument...you may want to revise that one.

When someone says, "No text," they are usually telling people to refer to the title.

Anyway, unless you were there, you may not "get" certain games. And there's nothing wrong with that. Just appreciate old games for what they are, and play what you like.

Or you could just type what you wanted before you posted it. You're not going to die if you post your thread 5 minutes later than when you to.

I may be too young to experiance the effect of most games but I have taken the time to play them and that relates to my point, does the effect a game has at one moment in time alow it to be called one of the greatest games to play of all time?

Sometimes people just refer to the title, don't post up a topic if you are still adding to it. The enter key is not your friend during the process.

Nostalgia's always going to play a part in peoples' tastes. I spent more time playing Mario when I was a kid than I spend on any game I buy today. Sounds kind of silly now, but it was one of the 3 games I had for the Nintendo.
Many others were in the same situation, and Pong or Space Invaders may have been the only game they had, and when you spend 5 days a week playing the same game over and over for years without it getting old, it seems way better than these games today where you play through it once and never touch it again.

/thread, I guess?

I guess you're right. I never thought about it that way. Maybe my gameboy colour should pitch in on bus fare every once in a while. Thanks.
You're right though, old games do get treated better. But its because we remember landmarks and we remember the good ones. Then it becomes easy to forget that there were just as many awful, horrible and tedious old games as new ones.

Depends what you mean by free ride. When you bring one up there is often someone accusing you of being nostalgic and there are always plenty of people lionising the latest game based on hype and graphics. The only way to enjoy old games is "warts and all" while you can gloss over the flaws in recent games as they are new and shiny.

If people haven't actually played the games they are talking about for ten years then that is another thing.

I agree; free rides should not be given just because the game is a "classic."

On the other hand, some newer games are worse; they try to one-up the classic, and end up getting some crucial element wrong, or breaking the game entirely (see: Tetris classic vs. Tetris by EA)

I agree. I wrote a review on Max Payne recently that some people were irked with because I was negative about it. One person challenged me on it, saying that it wasn't right to be irritated with the slow-mo mechanics because that game pioneered them. I responded that I wasn't going to go easy on the game because it pioneered something: that would be like forgiving Super Mario Bros. if it had been done in the style of I Wanna Be The Guy.

They should get extra credit due to their age. They were really solid games that you could play over and over since they didnt have online back in those days. There arnt many games now that you can pick up and play for hours. New developers have many games to look at on how to get their idea across now or how to do some mechanics.

Look at movies for example Star Wars has some really dated effects and directing style.. yet it is still a good movie that can be enjoyed by all.
