Are HD remakes a bit much?

Ever since Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix came out, alot of classic games have made their way onto Steam, XBL Market, and PSN Store. I've still got my PS2, Gamecube and Xbox (all at my mom's basement) with most of the games that are [url/http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.286866-The-Escapists-Official-Game-Release-Date-Calendar-Thread-News-Update]listed[/url] to have a HD remake in the near future.
I'm not against this thing, but some of these games are still pretty fresh in everyone's memories and I'm certain that most of the Escapist community still have their last-gen consoles with at least some of the listed games.

Will you buy the HD remakes for nostalgia, or curious about what you've missed out on?

For me, I don't look back on games I've missed out or put on my nostalgia goggles and bought a game I've bought before on a previous console.
(But Filip handed his money to Nintendo anyways...)

I will buy a remake for series that I missed out on, there's no debating if your going to play the series anyway, an HD remake is prettier than the original.

I wont buy a remake of a game I already own or have already played (Final Fantasy X is still sitting on my shelf, I can play it fine on my PS3)

As long as they are appropriately priced I really don't mind. Digital distribution is a great way to keep games in circulation that are out of print, for retired systems, or otherwise just hard to find. If they are in HD and have some bonus features, so much the better.

Not unless they do what the Resident Evil REmake did on the GameCube and change/ add things that didn't work the first time around. Retooling the art style might also catch my attention, but otherwise giving a game an HD makeover is just lazy, especially if the games in question aren't that old.

I'm a fan of them so far for a few reasons:
-I missed out on a lot of these titles during my 4-5 year hiatus from gaming in high school to early college
-They provided very good value. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus HD for $40. Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, and Peace Walker for $50. Beyond Good and Evil HD for $10. And so on and so forth...
-These are great games. They're worth getting anyway, especially if you missed out on them. But they're worth getting if you'd just really like to see them updated as well.

I understand the skepticism, as it seems a little like publishers/developers are saying "me too!!" and hopping on a bandwagon. But companies trying to make money is not a bad thing, and this isn't something I feel like I'm getting ripped off for.

Aaaand that about covers it. Having missed out on loads of PS & PS2 games because I never had the consoles, I'd love the opportunity to play through the classics without having to claw my own eyes out due to how shit they look.

I will add that I think that a substantial amount of time needs to have passed before the HD remake is, well, made. And that the time-gap between the original and the remake gets bigger the newer the game is. For example, I think the Halo remake is toeing the too-soon line.

I don't see any reason to object to them.

They're all quality games with some visual polish offered at reasonable prices. Is giving new players and people who missed out on them a chance to play these games such a bad idea? Sure, it's a cheap way for publishers to make a quick buck, but they're not forcing anyone who already owns the originals to buy them again.

Only if I missed out on the original and if they ACTUALLY LOOK BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL. What? You don't believe such a thing can happen in this day and age, you say? Well, prepare to be informed.

Medal of Honor: Frontline - Original Xbox

Medal of Honor: Frontline Remastered - PS3

Bleh, the PS3 version actually looks a bit WORSE than the XBOX. As the Heavy would say, "HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?!" X-P

They allow you to replay old games that you enjoyed or catch up on something you missed the first time round.

Where's the harm in that?

Bit much? I don't think so. I'm gad they're doing this. I've missed out on a lot of titles, particularly Shadow of the Colossus and ICO, which incidentally have HD remakes on the making. I do not have any older consoles any more (well, I donated the PS2 that I had to my band rehearsal space) and I do really want to play these games.

Remakes are cool, but these remasters are kind of lame. Some of them are cool because they re-release modern classics (Snake Eater, Silent Hill 2, Team Ico's games, Beyond Good and Evil, etc.), some are decent values too, and it's just nice to be able to play a game on a console that previously couldn't (The PS3 one's are kinda annoying based on the fact that it USED to be able to play them...).

Nope, I've bought quite a few of the "Classics HD" bundles for PS3, The God of War Collection, The Sly Collection, The Prince of Persia Collection, The Tomb Raider Collection (For some reason),

The God of War Collection Volume II is out tomorrow, and I will be purchasing it. I will also Get the Ico collection as I've never played Ico and I love Shadow.

Hd remakes don't interest me in the slightest , i will not buy them id i have and/or played the original , i don't buy games for graphics , i buy for gameplay . I prefer the FF4 on game boy andvanced to FF 4 on the DS . After buying the ds AND the GBA versions , ( while owning the original FF2 that game out in america a long time ago ) i decided never to buy an remake with improved graphics , especially if it already own it .

I do wonder , how many people actually buy HD remakes ? And how much remaking games costs in a whole . I doubt that all these remakes break even . But thays just my speculation i really don't know .

I don't mind, as long as they aren't overpriced. So far the games have been around 7£ each or less where I buy them, which is pretty great. Mainly buy them because I missed out when I was younger, but also due to trophy support. My sweet, sweet trophies.
Gotten to play some amazing games I missed out on thanks to the HD releases.

I'd rather HD remakes than have 3D remakes/gimmicks personally, especially if there for nostalgia, because older games get harder to find and more expensive to acquire, so why not release old games to a new generation with a more shiny finish.
Agreed. Personally I'm looking forward to the MGS HD release. I no longer have a working PS2 but I have an old model PS3 that's still backwards compatible, for now. Once this one goes out on me I can't replace it with another one that's backwards compatible, but MGS is the only PS2 game I still play so this is a good chance to be prepared.

Plus Peace Walker on PS3? I Can't pass that up. MGS2, MGS3, and Peace Walker all in an HD release in PS3 format (also getting the first ever XBOX360 release) for only $50? I think it's a great idea.

It really depends on what they're remaking. I'm tempted to buy a PS3 just for the Ico and Shadow of Colossus remakes.
