Are horror films just gore now?

I rather liked 'Drag Me to Hell'. Didn't really scare me, just a lot of good jumps and techniques from Sam Raimi. It was a fun horror film. Probably not what you're looking for if you want suspense horror, though.

To Kill A Mockingbird is more suspenseful than anything else out that's meant to be suspenseful/scary. 30 minute court scene, a rabid dog, racists, and a black man on trial for a crime he didn't commit.

Atticus tried so hard...

I quite like the first SAW, it had an element of surprise atmosphere and I don't that it was gore-heavy... unlike the rest of the SAW films
So true. the ending was a pretty great one to. Fucking great. Everyone was being played.

The only SAW movie I watched after that was the second, after that,no more.

The Japanese make horror with suspense, not rely on buckets of gore and cheap scares.
Not every Japanese horror movie is great, but try these two: Suicide Circle and Audition (kiri, kiri, kiri!!!).

And I can name some good American ones too; Hide and Seek and quite recently: Drag me to Hell.
For the later, you can see what our very own Movie Bob thinks: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/765-Drag-Me-To-Hell

We're a generation of jaded cynics. Of course they're not all gore now, but that doesn't mean they're scary. Halloween was scary when Carpenter wrote it because of the suggestion of violence rather than the actual screentime of the violence, but the genre was taken in the wrong direction so for every Halloween there's a Friday the 13th, for every The Hills Have Eyes there's a sequel.

There's something sad about horror movies these days. It relies on jump scares, CGI and other few stuff.

What happened to the creepy parts? The part where the protagonist passes through a dark creepy alley. The dark musics sets in. You expect the monster to jump out right? No, it doesn't. In fact, the whole scene should make you feel nervous. That's it. No cheap scares, only the feeling that you're with the actor and you're scared like he is.

depends on what ones you are watching but the answer really is no, those that say yes really don't watch a lot of horror films and base the judgment on one or two they might actually see or just the trailer for that movie

You forgot the robots, helicopters, ninjas (that shapeshift into bears, volcanos and Presidents), the time travelling castle, a planets worth of nukes and a gigantic moon-chain.

Either that, or you've got the title slightly wrong.

On topic: Check out The Orphanage. Subtle, character driven horror at it's best.

The Ring. And it was because it was the first movie that used the Japanese to Western style of horror movie, all silence and minimalistic style. Seriously, I looked around every corner that walked past that night. And I didn't open any cupboards.

sadly blood and gore has become part of the horror film template that people seem required to follow. directors need to realize that atmosphere works better than blood and guts. Just look at movies like The Ring, or The Grudge; those movies made me go through the house with the lights on for a few nights
