Okay, I was talking to friends today about and it strayed for a little into the topic of drinking. (We are all underage, for the record) I tried to make a joke about Mexican fathers letting their sons drink with them at a young age. I personally know what this is like since I am Mexican and it's common knowledge amongst us. Then everyone looks at me like I just slandered a holy figure and started talking about the dangers of drinking and what-not. Which ended up in me totally burning out a joke and being ignored at my attempts to give reasons why I said it.
Short story long, are we really becoming so uptight about everything that someone can't make fun of THEIR own race without angering people?
(I know I'm probably wrong, but the context is what matters)

EDIT: I put this in the wrong forum, sorry

Short Answer: Yes

Long Answer: Regarding everything, I hate political correctness and believe politically correct people should be dropped in volcanoes.

I have black friends who are racist to themselves and it's hilarious. I've never been in a situation like you before, but people in public positions are definitely getting to uptight and "politically correct".

I agree completely. People take everything far to seriously all of the time. Relax and make jokes, be they racist, prejudiced, or just plain mean! It's good for you!

I hate political correctness. I understand how being sensitive is a good trait and all, but political correctness is the whitewashing of our speech. I don't like having to tip-toe around someone's sensibilities. I don't force anyone to watch what they say around me, and I'd appreciate it if I wasn't forced to dance around their personal ideals of what's "proper".

Oh God, yes. I figured that it was waning from when I was younger, but seeing a lot of absurd seriousness on this site's forums (which is predominately younger than me), I realize it's gotten much worse.

No, you probably messed up the delivery of the joke. If it isn't 100% clear what you're saying is a joke, someone is going to take you seriously.

Yeah, it's disconcerting.
I see a lot of stuff to do with people reducing our emotions to chemical reactions on these forums a lot, and of all the things to sadden me and to make me feel certain that the majority are losing their humanity, that solidifies it.

I didn't mess up the delivery, I referenced that a lot of Mexicans start to drink while underage, which is a stereotype among us (more so in the South)and no one seemed to realize that I just stereotyped myself and that I made fun of my own race

I think the worst part out of all of this is the fact that no one in my circle of friends is of age yet and they ALL think like that. It makes me feel like the Android among Robots.

I don't get why they are so angered by this I'm mexican and that is definitely true I mean I don't drink because I don't like it but the fist time my father offered me a drink I was around 5 years old and I puked because it tasted awful, he always offers me but I just don't like it. Besides here in Mexico (cause I not only am from Mexico I live there too) we make fun about ourselves all the time but if somebody who ain't mexican (or is but does not live here) makes a joke about us most people get pissed off and I've noticed that mexicans who live in other countries tend to piss them off more than racists, well at least in the part of Mexico that I live in anyway.

Thread title brought this to mind:

OT: People are getting more serious overall in gaming, but it's nothing I can't handle. Stay chill enough and things will go relatively fine no matter what.

Yeah some people are, but then again some people take the dont take it so seriously thing too far, for instance on some website where people seem to think repeating the word "******" is hilarious or that being incredibly sexist to women is funny as hell, i dont mind them so much, its just that its happens so much its just not funny

So you singled out a stereotype about Mexicans, which is well known to Mexicans, and then when your friends didn't laugh and instead talked to you about why underage drinking is bad you thought they just didn't get it?
If they think that that is something wrong with the culture, or that you'd been drinking and they had a problem with it then they would be inclined to convince you of the problems with underage drinking. Were they meant to stand around and laugh about drunk little mexican kids, if it went against their understanding of alcohol and the laws around it? are they the kind of people who would?
I think that if it were an untrue stereotype (which you've said it isn't) it would've been a joke, but it sounds like you presented it as a fact and your friends reacted to it as such.

Also, it would've been politically correct to say "oh, well, they're allowed to give their kids alcohol because that's a part of their culture" irrespective of whether it is or not. His friends did the politically incorrect thing by saying that there was a problem with what those parents were doing. Serious and politically correct are different things. If you're going to hate something, figure out what it is first.
