Just wondering if anyone knows if there are any racing games that might be coming out soon that I might be able to get interested in.

Before anyone asks, yes, I know Road Redemption is going to be releasing very soon, but I've had that one for a while, watching as it's changed over time through Early Access.

One I've got high hopes for, though there isn't a set release date for it yet, is 90s Super GP, formerly known as 90s Arcade Racer. Looks like it's going to have elements from Daytona USA, Virtua Racing and possibly Ridge Racer as well.

If you need to know what I'm looking for in a racer, well, I'm not looking for simulators like Gran Turismo or Forza; but at the same time, I'm not looking for kart racers like Mario Kart or Crash Nitro Kart or etc. etc. I'd rather games like the old Need For Speed games, the ones prior to the Underground games up to and including Hot Pursuit 2; though I do prefer off-road racing in the style of Colin McRae DiRT or MX vs. ATV and such.

I would rather things err on the arcade side of things, favoring excitement and fun over realism; but just because I don't want to be bogged down in realism doesn't mean I want it to be all random chance crap like Mario Kart. If there have to be weapons in the game, I'd much rather the Full Auto approach: weapons are chosen before the race begins and cannot be swapped out after the event is underway.

Is there anything at all out there that I can get excited for? Or am I just going to be left in the cold here?

I don't know about up coming but for more recent releases if you have not given it a try I suggest Forza's spin off Forza Horizon. Less realistic, silly premise, but with plenty of cars to choose from. I personally have only played the first one but I have wanted to get the second and 3rd one. If you do not mind messing with the Windows game store you can get 3 on PC, if you have Windows 10. Since you like Dirt you will be happy to know that the setting is Australia with an emphasis on off-roading. The handling is variable but edges toward old Need for Speed esque, and one of the DLC expansions was a cross over with Hot Wheels.

I am not kidding.

I don't really keep track of upcoming games, but there's been a lot of them recently:

Fast RMX (Switch)
Wipeout Omega Collection (PS4)
Dirt 4
Redout
Trackmania Turbo

I tried the first one but was kinda put off. As for getting the third, well, I'm running Windows 7, not 10.

I was put off by the color switching mechanic of FAST Racing League, but apparently the sequel kinda made that less of an issue? Haven't played them, don't have a Switch or Wii U to find out.

wipEout's never really been my style. Notice how I'm frequently trashing the idea of random powerups in racing games. Besides, the machine handling is too loose, too unresponsive. One of the reasons I prefer Nintendo's F-Zero series.

I'm actually very wary of DiRT 4 because of the whole "team management" thing. I'd rather just focus on the race.

The more gameplay I watch of RedOut, the less appealing it becomes. Mostly because of the loose and unresponsive handling.

Trackmania, well, I've got the old version, United Forever Star Edition. Pretty fun. Might wait for the rest of the series to go on a good sale.

Aw man, I came into this thread prepared to get angry because you'd off-handedly dismissed all the good racing games that have come out recently or are coming out soon, but then you clearly and fairly stated your preferences in racing games and now I've got nothing :p

Now, instead I'm think that you've asked a good question... are there actually any good games like what you want around at the moment? Seems like you'd have to go pretty old-school to get anything that would really meet your critera. I'd actually be interested to know, even though I usually prefer circuit-based racing that strikes a balance of realism and accessibility (really looking forward to Forza 7 at the moment).

Yeah, seems like nothing of the sort has been made since... 2010, I want to say? Criterion's Need For Speed games were good, but they erred too close to Burnout and didn't really know what they were trying to be.

Shit, Driveclub feels like more of a Need For Speed game than anything released any time recently. It had been twelve years since Hot Pursuit 2.

It does seem like that. I got lucky that I did find an interest in Forza. Though I perfectly understand what kind of racing game you want as it is the reason I am looking toward older stuff for my racing game fix. That middle ground between Mario Kart and Gran Turismo. Can you think of old titles that you may have missed out on or do you really want a new game.

I'd rather a new game, if I'm honest; but the ones I missed out on most, that I can think of, would be Namco's old Ridge Racer games from the PS1, and I think they released some of them for PS2 as well.
