Well I suppose some are, as games become more and more expensive to develop, the companys need to ensure they'll have a large audience, so they add in new, easier difficulty settings for the more casual gamer.

Have you played Survival mode in Left 4 Dead?

That should answer your question.

I would say yes, overall games have been getting easier. Its that or i've just gotten so good that all games seem easy now.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is the only game that i've almost given up on because of the constant strings of death I had to endure the first few times playing it, not being able to see any strategy to the bosses other than button smash made it worse.

Left 4 Dead is only difficult because you have to rely on other players, it only takes one person to mess it up for everybody. I agree that survivor mode on that is close to impossible.

RE5 was a challenge at first because of its controls, which made the game fun for me. Professional mode wasn't that bad because you were able to use all the upgrades, taking the point out of the difficulty.

Games are difinately getting easier. I remember the games that you did not stop playing because they were so fun and they took forever. Think of Zelda, ocarina of time. Man i love that game,

I'm not sure. A lot of the older game difficulty were due to purposeful design and sometimes even hardware limitations. Every developer wants the gamer to see what they made, so why make the game so hard that the average player won't make it to the end?

Yes, they are.

Back in the early days most video games were arcade machines, so they were deliberately more difficult so you'd have to drop in more quarters. When they were ported to the likes of the NES the difficulty wasn't altered. This was seen as the norm so all games were made at that difficulty at that time.

Since arcades are pretty much dead there's no reason to make games harder for the sake of quarter eating.

Play Escape from Butcher Bay or Bioshock on Hard or Impossible and ask that.
Shortnened Length might have something to do with difficulty, but I personally don't feel games are getting easier.

Generally yes, but I didn't realise how much so until recently. I just started buying PS2 games again (to save the moey i'd usually spend on the 360) and it struck me straight away just how much more difficult they are.

Some games are getting easier, but like people have been mentioning difficulty settings which I like because it gives replayability and does open up the game to a larger audience. Also like mentioned Survival mode in Left 4 Dead is very difficult but it's not the only aspect of the game, it's something to work on and get better at that you have to be good at the game to succeed in.

I think games are more getting shorter than easier, even though you can't really put a time limit on multiplayer and there are some games, mostly RPGs, that can give you very numerous hours of enjoyment.

They are, and it's to draw in more casual gamers. After a while, I think hardcore gamers will have complained enough where developers will start making harder games again, but by that time, they will have drawn a huge group of new gamers. I think that it's a very small price to pay to draw in new blood to the gaming world, and games are still fun, so let's just let things happen as they will.

Hmm, that's quite tricky. Games like Ninja Gaiden often show off how difficult they can be, while other games seem like a cakewalk.

I'd say the most ideal game is a game which can be both easier AND harder than games of the past, through the choice of difficulty levels and alternate modes. At least then, a game can be playable by both casual and hardcore players alike!
