Did your parents ever say to you as a child "you're lucky that you've got what you have, there are people in the world worse off than you." ?

Well, my parents used to tell me that frequently, along with "Finish your dinner, the staving kids in Africa don't even get half of what is on your plate, be grateful for what you have."

As I child I used to just brush that off, but now that i've gotten a little older and now that I start to fully understand the elements of the world, it's got me thinking. Are we really that much better off?

The obvious answer would be yes, but is it really the case?
We, the developed nations, are going through harsh times, our economy is slowing, our natural resources aren't going to last forever, we're abusing the environment, we're running out of living space, overpopulation is a growing problem. So are we really that much better off?

They are comparing today's economic crisis with the great depression of the 1920's, I know personally that one(1) AUD = 0.6420 USD, And yet, earlier last year, it was up around 0.95 USD.

Will there be a day where parents turn to their children and say, "You have to eat that red soup, we're not as fortunet as some people dear." I mean, will everything get so bad that one day, our first world countries of today, will be our second and third world countries of tomorrow? China's moving up fast, it wasn't ever this powerful, financially, it also has one of the best academic structures in the world. I remember seeing in a video that china has more A+ students in their schools then America has enrolled students. That's just unbelievable, for every American student, there is a student in China that is a high achiever.

Did your parents ever used to say that you were better off then most other people?
What do you think about today's social status in regards to the economy?

I'd love to say yes, but a simple "yes" is very short-sighted.

My generation may be able to ignore the current issues, and our kids will have to deal with it.

I do feel incredibly lucky to be born and live in the USA. It's far from perfect, but it's better than waking up to mortar shells hitting my house, right? Social status is still determined by your economic standing, but at least there's a "possibility" of going from "rags to riches" (at least they want me to think that...) as opposed to other countries where you're just kinda screwed (so I've heard).

China actually sees the rest of the world as a threat instead of our attempted (read: forced) friendships with the rest of the world. China doesn't have political parties with their own personal agendas above those of the people.

There are plenty of advantages that their government has over ours, and it's depressing. We no longer have the 1940s-1950s "We are awesome and we will change the world for the better because it's the right thing to do" mentality. Everyone is either a cynic (me), or they find any patriotism after the Bush administration is unjustified (70% of America, it seems.)

To be fully honest, I think society itself has ruined humanity.

Multiple amazing civilizations have existed on our Earth, and all of them eventually killed themselves off (read: Roman Empire, Greece, etc).

If Earth is the only planet with life, I think we'd all be better off if we had to hunt for food and weren't allowed to use technology past fire and basic tools.

People would work together more, there would be less factions dividing humanity as a whole (countries, states, cities, neighborhoods, everyone who has a problem with someone else for NO GOOD REASON (LOL UR AMERICAN LOL UR BRITISH), etc...), and the environment wouldn't be imbalanced since we would be unable to really make an impact at all.

Granted, it would perpetuate no advancement forever, but many civilizations chose to do this and enjoyed it (read: Japan (at least until we knocked on their door with battleships...)).

However, if there is life outside of earth, I believe that we must unite together in case of threats (since we wasted so much time in the dark ages), in which case, at least with Internet communications and various other global-working togetherness, we have a chance.

I'd say that my life is fine, many people have it worse, but overall...humanity has a lot of problems that need fixing.

Also, America's downfall is coming in about 20 years.
