Contributors Wanted!

Greetings all!

We're looking for one or two folks that can actively contribute on the Escapist!

What we're looking for is someone from our community with the ability to write somewhat professionally (better than me) and review various topics that could include video games, mods or other types of content that others may enjoy reading about from a perspective of a fellow member of the community.

If you're interested, you may private message me, email me or simply respond to this thread with a review sample so we can take a look at it and see if you're what we're looking for.

While we won't be able to offer monetary compensation, we will give the lucky person or people special badges that have yet to be made for their profile to let everyone know just how awesome they are! (Maybe I'll throw in a few others, too!)

Good luck and I look forward to reading your samples!

i've been thinking about starting to write reviews for awhile. this sounds like a good way to motivate me to get off my ass and finally do it.

as people can probably already tell, i'd mainly write about Nintendo stuff i play and then from time to time i'd write about Xbox Stuff as well, for example i don't play my Xbox One any where near as much as i play my Wii U or soon my Switch but at the moment i've just started Playing Halo Wars 2 which i could write about.

is there a date we need to have a review sample done by?

You've already got a Movie Guy :(

But you could put me down as someone who would have some interest at the very least. I've never reviewed games (what I assume you would be looking for) but that's more because I'm always so far behind on games (you guys hear about this Fallout 4 game? It's pretty swell if you ask me). If you go into the User Reviews, you can see all my stuff but here a few of them...

Hardcore Henry [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.945357-tippy2k2-tells-you-what-to-think-Hardcore-Henry] (Good movie!)

X-Men Apocalypse [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.944429-tippy2k2-tells-you-what-to-think-X-Men-Apocalypse] (Not so good movie...)

Sausage Party [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.942632-tippy2k2-tells-you-what-to-think-Sausage-Party] (Good movie!)

Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.942190-tippy2k2-tells-you-what-to-think-Batman-V-Superman-Dawn-of-Justice] (Not so good movie...)

I write as a hobby (See; recent review of For Honor in the User Reviews section) and when I am able. A lot of my reviews tend to be older games because I get them as they're on sale. I'm also unemployed so the whole "No compensation" next to the "actively contribute" requirement does not spur me to throw my name in the hat, as it were. I'm sure many will feel the same.

While I won't put it as bluntly as Loop did above, I will agree that asking people to create content for the site for free (while the site makes ad revenue off of it) seems a bit skeevy.

I'd volunteer, because I have the time and writing skills, but lets be honest. My opinion of whatever is 'oh god, its so boring, after 1 hour I stopped watching/playing it and just watched Futurama instead.'

No while that's an accurate and respectable opinion of most everything, it ain't gonna get clicks.

I mean, I could, but as I've already got a job, am helping run a YouTube show, don't have a use for immaterial rewards, and get a distinct impression that a small chunk of the people who still come here would get their various underwears in a twist over what I'd have to say...

I'ma pass on this one.

I've been writing without monetary compensation for only two years now, and I'm already quite bored of it.

Experience has been nice, but I can't buy useless crap to sit on my shelf with experience.

No thank you, I don't have the time to contribute right now with any sort of consistency, although as a recommendation rather than trying to find one or two people why not make it more of a community thing? It could definitely help grow the forums if discussion was given more of a spotlight while those who regularly put in good effort are possibly rewarded with the opportunity to contribute with more substantial pieces of their choosing that are then highlighted.

I recall at one point The Escapist sort of dabbled in something like that but it fizzled before ever really going anywhere, which I always figured was a bit of a shame.

To be fair, they used to do this way back in the day, around 2008 and 2009. Members of the community wrote for the site for free, and all they got for it where badges on their profile, so it's not exactly like this is a new move by the site.

Eh, I understand The Escapist may not be in the rudest financial health, and I sympathize (and in fact just contributed my annual pittance in PubClub dues the other day for what it's worth). But I'm of the camp that feels a professional website should pay its contributors for their content. An all-hobbyist site would be a different matter, but as long as someone is getting paid, everyone who works for the product deserves to as well. Other arrangements tend towards the exploitative, and sadly the work experience as an intern on a gaming website is hardly a reliable stepping stone towards a paying career in writing in these days of oversupply.

So normally I am morally opposed to deals like this but I am considering it. However since your not offering money I want to know about retaining the rights to any content I put up.

Look, I've been here in some form or another for 10+ years, so hopefully I won't incur moderator wrath for calling this site what it is; A dead meme.

The lights have been flickering for a long time now, much to the chagrin of everyone who considered saying the Escapist was dying as "doomsday" spreading even just two years ago. I've waited and watched for long enough to distinguish between a lull in traffic and the death rattles of a dying beast.

Some of the existing contributors are woefully incompetent, and the big money-maker (Yahtzee) is hanging around more out of a sense of obligation than anything else. The site has sunk to outsourcing most of it's content to either forum posters or youtube channels that post their content months ahead of when it premieres here. As much fun as it is for some forum users to point their fingers and laugh at the idea of the Escapist petering out, it's happening.

Fact is, it doesn't look like this site will be a part of games media 10 or even 5 years from now. And that pains me to say, because I've been ghosting here longer than most, it doesn't give me any pleasure to say. But this place has become a cesspool of like-mindeness and stagnation. The Escapist will likely die with a whimper, rather than a roar.

Well, this is embarrassing...

We're forced to put this on hold for now. A few things came up that are causing us to put a halt to this project for the time being, however, we do look forward to working on this in the near future.

I would like to thank everyone for voicing their opinions, good and bad, and especially those who submitted samples for us to review.

As always, if you have an idea/suggestion/feedback about the Escapist, we would absolutely love to hear from you!

Thanks,
n0e

Based on the folk's opinions here, a lack of monetary compensation for a site that will make ad revenue off said articles does sound like a potential cause to halt said project, if that was even it to begin with.

I was gonna nominate our good ol Taco man for some regular Taco News, but even that seems to be dying. Hell, it did for a lengthy amount of time. That, and it probably wouldn't be something you could put on the site's resume and say "We have this!" without getting a few eyebrows raised, as quality as I think it is.

Ebola_Chan said it best though, and I pretty much agree with all that was stated there. But I greatly applaud n0e, and everyone else for trying to keep the place alive. I'll be honest, I want it to stay alive. And if it can somehow drag itself out of this hole, sign me up! I'll probably be one of the last here, the type asked to hit the lights on the way out.

The lack of content is one thing, having content from YouTuber's whose content already aired weeks/months in advance is another. But asking to fill the gaps for free... this kinda reminded me of the Xbox One reveal, honestly. But hey, the staff should absolutely keep coming up with stuff. Because if our hands are thrown up to say "We're done here," then it's best to just shut it off all at once, not drag it out slowly like it has been so far
