So I had an interesting conversation with a friend regarding forums and how people learn much about one another through their posts and online interactions. Then it came up that my friend (who is on a completely different forum) usually clicks on the profiles of users who he thinks are really cool or who made some really interesting comment to see if there is any further information to glean from it. More to the point he hopes there is a picture or something that may put a face to the name. I therefore quipped "it's a bit much don't you think, you're sort of stalking them"

Anyway, do you do what my friend does? Do you travel into other user profiles in the hopes of getting to know more about them? if yes, is that stalker-ish or not?

I don;t do that here, but I do do that on Yahoo Answers if I end up repeatedly posting answers for a user who's questions I can answer frequently.

Oh, all the time. May do it to you in a bit OP.
I even browse through some of their older posts at times, just to see what they are like. I do the same for threads and the ZP comments section to see how many people get Wrathed.

And it may be a wee bit stalkerish.
Even more so if you just admit you're going to stalk the OP.

I used to do that quite often.
And then I started looking for threads on my own.
Every now and then, when I'm really bored and I've gone through five pages of the threads, I'll take a peek through my friends list for interesting topics.

I don't usually click on other people's profiles unless I think I may know them in real life, but I don't think that it's being a stalker. If your friend then went and googled the name they found on a profile, or searched for them on other websites, and did things like that, that would be stalker-ish.

If someone makes an interesting post I may check their profile to read any information about them to get a better idea of who the person is. Or perhaps try to understand their point of view, if we are having a discussion about something. I don't really care about a picture, to me its better not to know what they look like. I don't think its stalker-ish unless a person checks someone's profile constantly and reads their posts.

The point of a profile is to let people know about yourself. I ususally look at them investigate trolls.

I've got my eye on you now, Ulysses!

OT: Only if I am adding them as a friend. In which case it's unavoidable

I look at other peoples' profiles only every so often. I actually try not to, since I found someone who lives close to me (it started feeling creepy).

My own profile contains as little information as I feel I can get away with.

Already clicked on a few profiles of you posters here, yes the topic more or less made it inevitable. Seriously though I do so out of curiosity, be it to glance upon old posts should the person appear intriguing or have a noteworthy post or character (roleplay sims) or simply curious of their gender. More or less it derives from a mixture of boredom and curiosity. Personally I would cite it "stalk-ish" for lack of a better word, if a person consistently checked a random strange's profile day after day or followed them into threads frequently. A simple glimpse is harmless.

Sometimes when they have an interesting Avatar, just to see if they listed what it is/where they found it.

I only do so to check ones age and sometimes nationality.
I must admit I don't often take people under 16 seriously.
I'm an ageist!

Why yes, on occasion. I thought about implications, but whatever - if they don't want me to know anything, they shouldn't put it up there.
