Sharing is Caring, a motto that is apparently still not fashionable in America as a teenage boy gets arrested because his friend shared his lunch with him. Another little victory in the never ending fight against socialism! Oh boy.

Sharing or trading food during school lunchtime is not unheard of, but sharing landed one teenager in police handcuffs. Adam Hernandez was accused of stealing chicken nuggets from a $2.60 meal. But those were actually the nuggets his friend, Gakaree Garner, gave to him. Adam got in the lunch line to get some sauce for them. According to Garner and the police report the cafeteria cashier told the Assistant Principal that Adam stole the chicken nuggets. The Assistant Principal then told the police officer in the school, who called a squad car. Garner says, "They actually put him in handcuffs, and actually tried to force him into the car." Ava Hernandez, Adam's sister, says, "They were like, 'Well do you know that friend receives federally free lunch?', and I said, 'I do now.', and they said, 'Well, it's illegal to share a free lunch so either way Adam was breaking the law'."

Adam was issued a municipal citation for theft and a $170 fine, which he chose to fight in court to keep his record clean. A youth group Urban Underground trumpets Adam's cause, fighting against young people needlessly being put in the judicial system.

More information. [http://www.wisn.com/news/24317843/detail.html]

The resolution of this case was that the charges against Adam were dropped. Ava Hernandez said she is happy that Adam will not have to live with this for the rest of his life.

I don't think the cops arrested him because he was sharing, but because they didn't believe that often made up story and assumed he was lying and trying to bring his friend down with him.

Edit: read it a second time and I am mistaken. It seems the cop or teacher said that its illegal to share something you bought, which strikes me as odd. What difference does it make if I throw it in the trash or give it to someone?

...wut? Man, I was just watching Jamie Oliver's School Revolution where he was in an American school trying to get them to eat healthier... But apparently just getting them to eat is illegal.

Seriously, I have so little faith in America these days.

So much for common sense in this world, I mean even if he stole them he shouldn't be punished like that.

That is just stupid on so many levels. So, let's point out my favorite. The police officer likely spent a few hours at least with the boy, not to mention the paperwork and the holding cost. Now consider that the lunch was 2.60, and then add in the $170 fine, which is more then 50X the worth of the lunch. Add that all together, and you get some good ol' political stupidity on the rocks.

That's... seriously, it's just idiotic. Who even came up with such idiotic law and why anyone even responded to it. The police should just ignore something like that. Oh well, America, hurray for the land of free and just.

.......WHAT?

No really. What the fuck?

Damn... the stupid is just too great. *sigh* well at least he got off...I think there would've been riots in that school if he'd have been charged.

Thank you for sharing this story with us, but unfortunately you are now under arrest.

You have the right to remain outraged.

I've heard of cases like this before and I don't think police should get involved in stuff kids do in school unless it's really serious, that's why detentions and suspenions exist, so the school can deal with rule breaking and minor law-breaking without pointless legal intervention.

Plus I don't think they should have been punished for sharing, that's a stupid idea!

An American cop was once quoted as saying: "Who needs common sense when you've got laws?"

This was after a British journalist asked the cop to show some common sense. Yes he and his team were unloading in an airport "no unloading" zone but they asked for a little clemencey because it was a sunday and the airport (must have been a small one) was closed.

Let's hear that again - "Who needs common sense when you've got laws?"
