Hey guys!
I figured that some folks here might be interested to know about my wonderful home state of Virginia!

I live in Northern VA, about 40 minutes from DC, and it's a great area.

So, ask away!

For some reason, I came here thinking you were wanting to ask a virgin questions... or someone who takes virginity from people frequently.

So I guess my question has to be; What's so special about Virginia??

How long did it take you to stop finding your state?s name funny?
When I learned what the name meant, I really didn't understand the implications.

It is, in fact named after the virgin queen of England.
Is that what you mean?

We're a really diverse state. We have swamps and beaches in the far East, rolling hills in the middle, and mountains in the West. We're also one of the most historically significant states in the Union, having been the first to be colonized by the British, and we were the sites of the beginning and end of the Civil War.

Why the hell did they think it a good idea to name it virginia?
sorry about that but on a serious note how cold is it down there?
It's named after England's virgin queen, from the 1600s.

Also, right now we've got pretty nice weather. We're warming up for Spring.
We had a cold Winter, but the climate is perfect right now.

Why is there no East Virginia?
Because the split was instigated by the part of VA that split, right around the time of the Civil War. The part that was still part of the South wasn't part of the Union at the time, so they didn't really feel the need to rename themselves.

Now that you've had a couple warm up questions, I've got one for ya.

My wife and I are thinking about moving out of state within the next few years. We would like to stay close to a coast as we both love the ocean and we're trying to moving someplace warmer (gogo seasonal affective disorder -_-) So I would ask you, Mr. Virginian...

How is the weather year round? I don't expect it to be drastically different than up here in Pennsylvania, but a few degrees warmer would be nice.

How's the cost of living?

What are the people of the state like overall? At the risk of being kind of offensive, I'll just be blunt. We're liberal agnostic. Would we find the place to be welcoming regardless of that? Are there areas in the state that are more of an 'artistic community' so to speak?

Do you feel that residents are proud to live in Virginia?

Because I certainly don't get that feeling when I'm at home (Nebraska).

Ok... this is a tough one.
Generally, it's pretty nice weather, but when it gets real muggy, it gets pretty nasty to be walking around.

Coast-wise, there are two main areas- bay and actual ocean. For the actual ocean, you're gonna need to live on the Eastern Shore or Southeastern VA.

As far as people go, you should fit in pretty well. While we may be lumped in with further Southern states, I've never really met anyone who was the stereotypical Virginian.

Also, I don't know a lot about living costs, since I'm just 14.

All in all, I'd say VA is a wonderful place to live.

If Virginia were to go to war with Ohio, who would win?
Virginia. We do have one of the largest Navy bases in the US, and maybe even the world, after all.

Another Virginian here, though from more of a central area from Richmond. I'm not sure this would make an exciting thread though. Either way, it's a decent state with a mostly temperate climate and an overall decent economy. It's one of those a little bit for everybody type of states.

To answer Berserker, if the two Virginias ganged up they could definitely take on Ohio.

Hey, you wanna help answer questions?
It'd be great to have someone else's perspective.
