Assassins Creed Revelations; Is It Going Too Far?

Many people thought that Assassins Creed Brotherhood was an obvious cash-in that did little to advance the Assassins Creed franchise.
While I think the game was fun, it evolved little in the gameplay department and the whole story felt meandering and aimless, like it could be cut completely with little detriment to the overall series.
But even I think that the newly announced Assassins Creed Revelations is taking it too far, STILL playing as Ezio and STILL being set in the Renassaince (however you spell that bloody word).
Despite being set in Constantinople, I still don't think this is a fresh enough change for the series. And as much as I'd like to play as Ezio in his fifties, climbing around spires whilst grumpily complaining that his back aches, the story can't do much more than stagnate in a plot that after Brotherhood is already stagnating.
There are so many amazing time periods and locations that would be perfect for an Assassins Creed game, that Ubisoft simply isn't exploiting; Colonial British Empire, The East, America, The French Revolution etc.
Its still early days and theres always a chance that Ubisoft will prove me wrong and it will be fresh and exciting with a story that feels important as well as setting the scene for the third Assassins Creed game.
What are your thoughts on Revelations? Where do you think the franchise should be heading?

I don't know. Honestly, I'll need more information about the final product before determining whether it's going to be as good as the previous titles.

I heard you play as both Altair and Ezio. At least every other gaming site I've been on has reported this.

I agree, I guess they want to milk a product that was well received compared to the original. I really want to see assassins from other time period as well, doesn't matter if guns are included as long as the same mode of travel are include, parkour and what's not.

Good to see that I am not the only one who would love to see an AC game - hell, any game - set in that time period. :3

Thats exactly what I was going to say. Ezio has a lot of value as a character and I don't see anything wrong with another game featuring him as long as the game is done well and improves on the previous one. And as long as this is the LAST ONE. Also Ezio has to die this time. He has to.

It's something that is just not explored in games :p
In fact that whole time period in Europe isn't and it was a hotbed for wars and revolutions perfect for an Assassins Creed game

... if Revelations follows after Brotherhood, hasn't Constantinople effectively ceased to exist by then? It's ruled by the Ottoman Turks, and they called it "Istanbul". Although outsiders called it Constantinople much to the Turks annoyance lulz. Does that mean AC is going to take potshots at someone OTHER than the catholic church now? Shock and horror...

I just remember getting in a rage when in Brohood they marked Constantinople as somewhere faaaar from where it actually was.
If they're going to reference it, at least put it in the correct spot on the map! lsdkfjsl

Not sure how they would work out some of the assassinations though... since alot of the people who died got executed. They would either have to assassinate lesser-known figures or -really- play with history. I know that AC2 certainly did that, but even then it wasn't too bad.

The Thirty Years War might be interesting too, but that's a time period even less likely to receive a game, which always makes me sad despite how horribly violent such a game would be.

He can't. As ACII showed us, the animus only records data through genetic memory. When that memory gets passed on to offspring, the "Camera" shifts from the parent's perspective to the child's. If Ezio dies, we'll be seeing it through the eyes of either his wife or his child.

Last I checked, Constantinople was still a widely used name for the city until the 20th century.

As for an AC game set there... Ezio is getting a bit old... and i'm not entirely sure what they will really do in setting the game there. I am, sadly, a bit unfamiliar with Ottoman history during the time between 1453 and 1520 or so. Annnnd... somehow I doubt Ubisoft will be having Ezio in the 1520's. The bugger would be pushing 60-70 by then, right?

According to first details he's somewhere in his fifties. Since they are doing this I at least want some hilarious grumpy old man lines :p

I, too, was really hoping to see another brand-new assassin brought into the mix by this point. I agree with the OP and think that "meandering" is about the best word to use here.

I'd still like to see one more new assassin ancestor before we move full-on to Desmond, mind.

Assassin's Creed 2 is still my second-favourite game of all time, but Ubisoft is really trying my patience already.

I preferred a new player character, but Ezio is still awesome. I can't say anything about the setting because it's been years since I even had a glancing study of the place.

Last I heard, the game is going to include all three protagonists: Desmond, Ezio, AND Altair. If it all takes place at the same location, it would still be Constantinople during Altair's segments and Istanbul for the other two.

I think Assassin's Creed's gameplay is fantastic and although the story was getting pretty drawn out in Brotherhood, and I agree I would like to see a new character in a new time period, I'm just such a sucker for the series I can't help but look forward to this... We're going to ISTANBUL, bitches. This is going to be fantastic. One great thing about this series is they keep setting it in places we haven't seen before in mainstream games, and being a Tourism student whos fascinated by beautiful and interesting places around the world, this is one aspect of the series they never fail me on.

and by the way, you play as all 3 of the main characters so far. Altair, Ezio, and Desmond. I also can't help but be excited to see what they do with that.

I just hope their PC version will be better this time (the multiplayer of AC brotherhood still doesn't work for me.)
