I'm going to upgrade my hardware but, silly question 25 minutes of googling haven't answered...
If I buy a new CPU does it come with a new socket? Or is it attached to the [new] motherboard.

If you're asking if a motherboard comes with a CPU pre-installed the answer is no, unless you're buying a somewhat pre-assembled unit. You need to get your own CPU that is listed as compatible with your motherboard of choice and install it yourself (it's a simple process, though).

You need to buy both a CPU and a motherboard that is compatible with it, for example if you choose to get an amd FX series processor you need to get a motherboard with AM3+ socket. If you get an intel Core i5, you need a motherboard which has the LGA1155 socket.
