Charlize Theron as a brawling bisexual super-spy in what appears to be an abundance of delightfully crunchy action scenes.

Jesus H Christ. It's like someone set out to make the film I would make if I had my own studio and no sense of shame whatsoever.

Granted, the 60s (70s?) spy aesthetic isn't really my thing, but I, uh... I think I'll cope.

Well now.

[/spoiler]

I like how she has bruises.

.

I really started to like her after I discovered her Funny or Die sketches, when she says 'Imma kill you with my sex [http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/cc77ac5dae/charlize-theron-stalks-some-dude?playlist=337042]' in her stalker bit. Fucking hilarious.

I knew this would happen, as soon as Fury Road turned out to be fucking awesome and Charlize Theron was most of the why.

I would very much watch this a lot.

I don't know, I kind of distrust any media (that isn't straight-up porn) that so blatantly tries to appeal to my base male instincts.

And maybe I'm jaded, but the long, uncut brawling sequence doesn't really do much for me anymore, if it ever did. A proper cut and edit usually adds to the snappiness of a fight.

Or perhaps it's all the "rude attitude" that makes it smack of insecurity.

Not sold I'm afraid.

Heresy!

I love a fight scene that relies on choreography instead of editing.

Way too many movies these days use skip through five camera angles for each punch. It's lazy and frequently detracts from the coherent flow of the scene.

Choreography sure, but with scenes like this it comes across to me as showing off for the sake of it. 'Look how we're not cutting at all, but instead are swooping the camera around. Isn't that cool!?' It reminds me of the church scene in Kingsmen, which also tried to look like one continuous shot for coolness sake, but it ultimately resulted in the fight becoming drawn out and boring.

You look at Mad Max: Fury Road and it has tons of cuts, but they work toward emphasizing the action and redirecting your attention. It made things snappy, the action impactful, and never resulted in any one scene becoming boring. Other examples would The Matrix 1 and Kill Bill 1. Edgar Wright also has a knack for this very snappy editing that gives action scenes in his movies tremendous energy.

I know there's a lot of action movies that use edits to mask shitty choreography, but when the two are done well it makes for the best action sequences.

As long as they don't try to tell us her bisexualness needs to be in the story because of some lame ass reason, I'm OK with it.

Eh, I kinda liked the first one. Hell, it would have been worth it just for That One Bit.

Sequel was extremely mediocre though. My expectations are not high for the next one.

The problem with long sequences is that you can often tell it's choreographed, as the people along the side of the frame are obviously waiting for their setup for the next move. The hallway fight felt very scripted to me. And I know they all are, but, at least with editing, you can shave off some of the more fiddly bits, and make it look cleaner. I'm not saying do 30 edits in a single, 2 second sequence, like Taken 3, but an edit here or there to get the better angle and sequence is never a bad idea in my opinion.

OT: Eh, I'm not terribly inspired by this film. It looks like it's going down the John Wick "style over substance" angle with the story, which is fine if done right. But I've never been a big fan of espionage movies. Never saw a single Jason Bourne film, and probably never will. Just not my thing.

Amen to that. I wanna see everything, particularly this movie. Also, James McAvoy is in it. He's pretty good.

Fair enough, the second film did feel rather weak. I guess it's really the cg that captivates me.

I'm with this one.
That "bisexual" lesbian scene looked really pandering.
Never heard of the character before. I'm usually supportive of movies featuring female leads that break the mold, but that trailer did nothing for me.

It is, however, 1000% my thing. Combined with that action sequence from that first trailer? Yup, I'm absolutely completely and totally on board. I can take or leave the "look at the sexay girl-on-girl action" but damn if I don't fancy seeing Charlize Theron kick major ass in an oldschool trenchcoat.

Sure is justified when there's plenty to show off though, which looks like it's the case. That shit looked amazingly brutal.

It's riskier, that's true. It takes a lot more practice and skill from the performers. Though there's also some examples of more grounded long fighting takes, Oldboy's famous hallway scene comes to mind. I think Daredevil's stairwell scene felt very grounded in that regard as well. Actual long martial-arts takes feel a little different though. I mean, sure you know it's choreographed, but holy shit that choreography. It's like ballet with bone breaking.

Oh and Jason Bourne movies? Yeah nah those aren't really spy movies, and are known for their shitty fight choreography (outside of the first one a bit). Real spy movies are a different breed entirely, even James Bond flicks aren't really spy movies.
