I'm not an Australian, but my partner is.

I'm pretty sure most Australians don't really care about Rupert Murdoch. Yeah, he was born in Australia. So what? He isn't a national icon or anything.

And Gallipoli is important to Australia because it was an event that unified their country. They were cheated, out numbered, maliciously commanded by the English and failed but they managed to fight incredibly, incredibly bravely and were tremendous examples of Australians. They fought hard for their mates and did their best. Also, remember they were only a country for several years at that point. It brought them all together and it made the world realise who Australians were.

Australia has arguably one of the most impressive track records during World War 1. Once they got their own commanding them, they out performed nearly every other country in battle. Look up General Monash. He and his Australians were responsible for the turning point of the whole war and if they did not take down the Germans single handedly whilst being ridiculously out numbered after the British were overrun, the war almost definitively would have gone on for another several months. Some people even go as far to say that if that if the Australians did not do that, the Germans would have gained enough of a foothold and enough time to actually rebalance the war and take Paris. But who knows.

So yeah, that's why WW1 in general is important to Australia. Gallipoli was their first battle in World War 1 too. They didn't do anywhere near that amount in World War 2, but Kokoda (a WW2 battle) is another huge Australian event. They held some of the worst terrain in the world against the Japanese whilst being out numbered and under resourced.

Mostly we don't a shit. He's not an Australian citizen anymore so he's not our problem.

First major battle Australian troops were in involved in, in a war that resulted in around 1/4 of the adult male popular of Australia being killed or wounded... All for a country that had only been established as a nation less than 15 years prior.

Fun fact about Rupert Murdoch, apparently my Gran pushed him into a pond as a child for acting big-headed and superior.

I'm not entirely sure how true that tale is, but it is feasible.

Yeah, that's pretty much it.

Really hate how the Aus education system seems to consider it the only military engagement on the damn planet though.

I'm Australian and I don't think about Murdoch at all, it's just never really relevant to me. As for Gallipoli the standard answer is it was the first major conflict we were involved in as a nation. But to be honest, I don't care about it in the least.

Rupert Murdoch is a twat, plain and simple. The world will be a better place when his black, shrivelled heart finally wheezes it's last.
All I know about Gallipoli is I got really effing tired of hearing about it in school. If you just go by what is taught in Australian schools, Gallipoli was probably the only time Australia ever fought anyone, ever.

You're gran deserves a medal for that if it true.

Well it seems that all the Aussies don't seem to mind him but trust all the British loath him because hes trying to dominate our news so he can control our politicians because a large number of the British public is stupid enough to believe crap like the daily mail
