Just like any other program, AutoCAD is good if you're good with it. I'm partial to AutoCAD and Inventor myself, but other people like other programs. If you're hoping to catch a job interview with your 3D rendering knowledge, though, AutoCAD has a recognizable name in the industry.

Autocad is a very very powerful tool. It is meant for use by trained people for serious, quantitative work.
If you want free-form drawing and experimenting do not get auto-cad, it would not be worth the 1.5+K.

Is AutoCAD a good program to get for 3D rendering?
If you're doing design or engineering projects, yes.

Otherwise, no, not by a long shot. If you're looking to get into 3D modelling, animation and rendering there are much, much, MUCH better software packages out there.

For professional level packages, Maya has the best out of the box rendering engine. 3D Studio Max probably has the best free and/or inexpensive 3rd party options. Lightwave has the best modelling system. Cinema 4D is the most accessible.

CAD is a great program for drawing 2d plans. Use Max or Maya for 3d rendering...or even Blender. Blender is free!
