are there more animes like this that you know of
ones that are dark, complex and have an awesome artstyle

I believe its what its called.

Beautiful animation and turns sailor moon upside down

and angel beats is good as well

out of all them ergo proxy seemed the intriguing

out of all them ergo proxy seemed the intriguing

MONSTER would be my personal recommendation. It fits with the dark and complex and makes death note seem like a children's novel in terms of complexity IMO. The art and animation is of adequate quality, about the same level as death note I would say. Its a sizeable length, 74 episodes if I recall. Its about a surgeon hunting down a serial killer whose life he saved (he didn't know it at the time) instead of saving the life of a notable politician for hospital prestige. Twists and turns all about and a very detailed and vast cast of supporting characters.

The following also fit your criteria of dark/complex with good art in order that I enjoyed

Black Lagoon (Not really complex for the most part but you may enjoy it, also best one in the art category)
Ghost Hound
Higurashi no Kori Ni

Try Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Dark magical girl anime with dark, trippy visuals)
And maybe Bakemonogatari (Supernatural / Mystery anime. Great visuals, although a bit dialogue heavy and slow paced, but great if you stick with it.) Both made by the same studio, and have a few similarities.
And I just recently started watching Steins;Gate. It starts off slow, but it gets better as it goes and is starting to be one of my favorites this year along with Madoka.

yeah, there is, it only goes for 12 episodes, and it's quite good.

Cowboy Bebop fits your bill. As stylish and gritty as a film noir, with awesome fight scenes and fantastic characters.

Code Geass
It is not really a dark anime, but it has 1 important similarity with Death Note: the protagonist vs the antagonist (although those terms don't really apply for Code Geass). If you decide to watch it, you will know what I mean after 4 episodes or so. Code Geass is (for me) one of the best anime ever.

Bloody awesome and a pretty good character development.
