I already own the original Baldur's Gate through GOG but have not got very far into it. Today I saw that the EE is on sale on steam and am wondering if besides the new Characters, there is much point in purchasing this Edition? Just to say one of the things that annoys me about the original is the way that rooms I haven't explored are blacked out is this the case in the EE?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any responses.

I got it a while back, and there is something wrong with the visuals; the highlighting box for characters won't show up, the screen keeps messing up and layering itself, and none of the portriats will highlight, so I don't know who I selected or not.

I'll probably eventually pick up the Enhanced Edition, but not until my favourite mods are made compatible with it. As of right this moment I'd say the original game is still the superior product simply because of the volume of mods out there for it; mods that improve the visuals, mods that improve the gameplay, mods that add more characters and interactions, mods that add more weapons, spells, and diversity, etc.

If you don't want to have to tinker with mods and still want a more updated experience then EE might be worth it, but for those willing to put some time into it the original is still the better deal.

Honestly you can get approximately the same updated graphics using mods. Destructoid had a really great mod guide for BG 1 and 2. Lemme see if I can find it.

Note that it's still very buggy and that there might not be any future patches due to legal issues between Overhaul and Atari.
I haven't played the EE yet, but most of the features it has are available by installing BG TUTU (a mod that makes BG1 work in the BG2 engine). In addition to that, there are plenty of mods available for BG1 and BG2 which can't be used with BGEE.

Has anyone played through the baldurs gate module they did in Neverwinter Nights 2? I wonder how that compares to the original and the enhanced edition.

I say just get BG2 and use the EasyTutu mod. Then use NPC project(adds in more party banter and such) and widescreen mod. So far I like it. I think it is better than the EE which just adds in a little content and doesn't have mod support.
