I don't know how much this happens, but I've started listening to a lot of bands based off of their appearances in video games I've played. I started listening to the Offspring because Crazy Taxi permanently embedded "Way Down the Line" into my brain. The Warriors game for xbox 1 had a great boss fight with the Turnbull ACs set to Fear's "I Love Livin' In the City." I later bought the CD and listened to it dozens of times (I collect CDs). I didn't care for most of the metal found in Brutal Legend (I already knew about Motorhead), but I also found out about Girlschool, a old 70s band that I will soon be investing a little cash in.

What other great songs in games have made seek out more material by the same musicians?

Poets of the Fall (aka The Old Gods of Asgard) from Alan wake, are fantastic for a few of their songs, though they're sadly similar.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater also had probably the most bonerific soundtrack in my opinion. Instanostalgia!

I got into Crush 40 thanks to the Sonic games and their awesome soundtracks.

I also started listening to more Disturbed after really liking Decadence in Need For Speed: Most Wanted.

Well, not exactly a band, but Module for his soundtrack of Shatter. I never get tired of listening to his work, especially that track named Aurora.

Dropkick Murphys because of Tony Hawk's Underground 1.
Twisted Metal 3 soundtrack got me into some of Rob Zombie's stuff. At least all of the tracks featured in the game.

Let's see..

Joujouka in Rez.

Genki Rockets in Child of Eden (pre-emptively).

Photek and LFO in the Wipeout series.

Video games may actually have introduced me to electronic music, now that I think about it.

EDIT: Wow, how did I forget Jonathan Coulton?

I agree with TheKruzdawg, Twisted Metal 3 had a kickass soundtrack that introduced me to one of my favorite bands, Pitchshifter. Fun fact about the TM3 soundtrack, you can play the game disc in your cd player as a regular CD. Came in handy back in the day.
