Remember when MS was going on about Battletoads returning?

Well...

As part of Season 3 for Killer Instinct, They brought back Rash from Battletoads.
The fact this kinda came from fucking nowhere aside, I LOVE how they nailed his animations, keeping that stupid over the top style from the 8-bit games.
He's actually playable now in a Beta form (Guy is still a WIP), but I like what I see so far and I can't wait for the Window's 10 launch :D

So what you think Escapists?

The sad thing is this actually fits. At this point KI's roster already looks more like LoL than any other Fighting Game.

Good ol' Fighting Frogs. I wonder if Gamestop is taking preorders for this? Let's all call them and find out...

I thought it looked more like Darkstalkers than anything else.
-Mummy
-Werewolf
-Creepy Japanese Ghost girl
-Spider Woman
-Monster (Riptor)
-Skeleton
-Golem
-Demon

I love me some Killer Instinct, but this seems a little TOO cheesy. Admittedly, I've honestly never understood the love for Battletoads (beyond the game being memorable for its difficulty). They always seemed to me like a poor imitation of the Ninja Turtles, and seemed like the precursor to the "XTreme!!" characters that were everywhere in the 90's. "They're bad-ass Toads with attitude!"

Well I'm all for this. Killer Instinct was already goofy and cheesy enough to where even a Battletoad will fit right in. I can't wait to hear the final version of his stage music (Killer Instinct has some of the most consistently good music of any fighting game series). I know there's a few more old-school characters to add like Tusk and Li Mei, but when they're all in, it would be kind of cool to see more crossover characters like this. Kind of give KI a bit of a Microsoft Smash Bros sorta vibe.

Oh, right, Killer Instinct is still a thing. Can't say I care, honestly I thought this was for Mortal Kombat until the video was underway. I totally forgot until this announcement, lol. Lemme google if it's a wii-y or whatever exclusive. X-bone? That's a surprise.

Yeah, Microsoft actually owns a lot of the old Rare games from when they bought Rare and then proceeded to completely dismantle the company and everything it stood for. That's why we got Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts instead of a proper, worthy sequel.

Killer Instinct though, is actually one of the few bright spots to come out of that. The reboot is actually quite good, and the people running it actually seem to know what they're doing. A PC port is also coming out early next year, which I am greatly looking forward to. Being tied to the X-bone was the one black mark against KI in my book.

It had a really good showing at Evo this year (seriously, if you enjoy fighting games, look up the KI Top-8 matches from Evo this year, they were great), and being unshackled from the X-bone can only help increase the player-base. It's an amazing time to be a fighting game fan. Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct are both back in the saddle and legitimately good again. Guilty Gear is back, and the stuff coming out about Street Fighter V is looking fairly promising.

Well, with the Gears of War Remaster coming with all the previous games, the whole Rare Rewind thing, KI coming to PC, and now this...

I think MS is actually starting to turn it around.....

Cheers, mate(s).

I for one feel Rash is completely out of place in this game. While KI has had goofy aspects in the cannon, the addition of a 6ft tall self-aware Looney Toons-esque character entering a fighting game with a consistent (sci-fi)fantasy art-style and serious tone is too jarring.

Etzio in SC5 fit well, Kratos in MK9 fit well, Earthworm Jim in CF fit well. Rash looks worse than Darth Vader and Yoda in SC4.

Thank you! Good description. One could argue that Kratos, Jason, Freddy, or the Predator were 'goofy' additions to MK, but at least those were violent, dark characters who fit into the violent, dark (but just a teeny bit corny) world of MK. This is just a bizarre character addition.

On the surface, they look pretty similar, and I'm pretty sure Battletoads was inspired by the Ninja Turtles. Still being able to turn your fist into a mace five times the size of your body is pretty neat, or should I say "Rad" and as graphics improved beyond NES graphics, it became even more eye-catching. Kind of like God Hand, they have this cartoony slapstick appeal to their fighting. Come to think of it, a friend of mine once suggested someone make a Battle Toads game that played like God Hand.

In my eyes, it fits since they are both Western franchise who they're kinda helping each other out.

Speaking of the toads, would they reboot that franchise in the future?

Could you be any more passive aggressive?

Its even coming for PC.

OT: Fits well, it looks goofy but this is a series where this already happened

This is already a series that contains a sapient cyborg-velociraptor, a robot-dominatrix who has built-in high heels, a literal space alien, a literal werewolf who's regrown his formerly-cyborg arms via magic, a secret agent who fights in booty-shorts, a robot powered by the soul of a magical native-american, a skeleton who is also a pirate, and the girl from The Ring. I really don't see how a battletoad is any less silly.

There's so many clashing origins, types of magic, types of science and types of magical-science. KI is an inherently silly game, and there's nothing wrong with that :) Its bizarre and tropey cast of characters was always one of the reasons people loved it, besides its solid, fast-paced fighting mechanics of course.

Well, Battletoads was made by Rare, KI was made by Rare so...

While it is out of place for the series, even by the loose standards they have, So long as he is balanced and is fun to play, I don't think anyone will mind all that much.
Besides, 3D renders of 8-bit animations AND Mick Gordon doing a cover of the Battletoads theme? @u@

In my opinion that line of thinking is a slippery slope.

Does KI have silly aspects? Absolutely. However, it is still realistically structured and takes its subject matter seriously. Although the game is filled with werewolves, mummies, and golems, everything had a grounding in believability. The art style is also realistic and the characters look like they belong in the same universe. I don't see how a forth-wall breaking giant Loony Toon toad could stand next to Hisoko, a vengeful spirit that is trying to get revenge for the death of her family and the pillaging of her home.

For instance, should Twilight be added? After all, magic is established in the KI universe therefore anything goes when relating to magic. Even the most hardcore MLP fan would agree that she would not fit in this game, especially if they try to match her art style from the show.

Rash sets a poor precedence that could kill the artistic integrity of the base game. I saw it happen to TF2 and the craziness of hats and items. The initial items needed to adhere to the game's art style and Valve had strict guidelines on submitting items. They needed to fit the era, style, silhouettes, and color schemes.

Now anyone to plays the game, even if you love it, would agree that the visuals are messy. The game lost its simple and clean look in exchange for neon colored hats which are on fire with shader glasses. The game has a cartoony style therefore everything goes.

I think you are overthinking this.
This isn't like TF2 Hats, Hats were part of a new reward system in the game at first and as time went on, more rewards needed to be given which leads into your example. (Which is pretty valid)

As for KI and Rash, it's a once off Guest Appearance. Fighting Games have been doing that for years. I mean, could you apply this same logic to when Spawn was in Soul Caliber 2?
Miles923, one of the people involved in the making of KI's Lore and Cutscenes, has basically said "Yeah, this as non-Canon as hell."
It's just a tribute to one of Rare's longest lasting icons and they even managed to get his gameplay to sync up with his NES version with his Combo Trait allowing for combos from the NES game.
Besides, King of Fighters is basically "SNK Cameos: The Game" and they prove that it's possible to marry guest appearances with artistic integrity. They literally had Metal Slug in their game once. Not even a character, the actual tank and they still made it work.

To conclude, I doubt a team that does though the trouble of animating that crazy wrecking ball move to look exactly as it did on the NES are going to jump the shark because of a non-canon guest appearance.
