Do you think bayonets are practical these days? My Dad usually carried a large bowie knife on his leg strap when he was in Iraq, but he never carried a bayonet attatchment with his M4. This isn't WW1 or WW2, so I don't think it's honestly practical. What do you think?

They're only useful in the closest of quarters, and even then your pistol is probably the better bet.

If you expect to be engaged in close quarters fighting then its going to be better to have one than not.

I think they're just there to look brutal. Cosmetic purposes only unless you have no other choice.

Of course, it gives good melee reach, better than a knife at least and it lets you get more force behind your thrust. They are also awesome and make your gun look totally bad ass.
dammit, couldn't find a clip of Lance Corporal Jones from dads army saying they don't like it up em

They're especially good at being used as toothpicks.

Other than that?

They mess up your aim, but in close quarter environments then sure they'd be practical; you don't need to reload a knife.

This, but also not this.
Close quarters, like room clearing, would be great for a bayonet.
But a pistol wouldn't be a better choice in a bind. A pistol would be a better choice if you had the time to pull it out. But if you don't, then a quick thrust forward with the bayonet to keep a guy back (Or to skewer his face) is faster then letting go of your rifle to pull out your sidearm.

Otherwise, on the battlefield in general, I don't think the bayonet has many uses.
A knife is always a 'must have', but it certainly doesn't need to be in bayonet form.

For modern use I don't see it being very practical but back when you had to reload for 2 minutes I can see the them being very benificial.

Attached to your gun? No, a grenade launcher or fore grip would be more practical, but otherwise you could use it for cutting... stuff, or playing mumbley peg with your comrades..

Yes, absolutely.

I met a man who's a paratrooper last year. He'd done several tours of Afghanistan and had been ordered to fix bayonets repeatedly, the trouble with fighting an insurgency is that the guy standing right next to you could be the enemy, then it's very close quarters.

He also had a lot of pant wetting tales about going into caves in the mountains and coming face to face with the enemy.

A pistol might be more usefull in close combat however so would your loaded AR.

The real world isn't like COD where you can shoulder your rifle, draw, aim and prime your side arm in all of half a second.
