Take a good long look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD9P2uyx6fQ
If Fish hasn't tried to have it removed again before you look, that is.

This man flew thousands of miles to meet people he idolizes, he wants to be just like them. All he asked was what inspired them, and instead of answering the man he was humiliated and bullied. The hurt on this man's face

I have plenty of words, and none of them are pleasant.

But I can say that he has no place crying about being "abused" or "bullied" when he himself crushes people that look up to and respect him.

He was a bit of a penis like, they all were really. I'm not really up to date with this whole Fish fiasco but it seems as though Fish needs to man the fuck up.

Well, in case that video ever does get taken down, I'm downloading it now. His acts of douchebaggery will not be hidden on my watch.

I always thought of Fish as an asswipe, and this video confirmed it. I will never support or defend people like him, no matter how (un)intresting or indie they are (or appear to be).

Ever considered the videos are getting taken down by Youtube's automated systems because fanboys with their panties in a knot are flagging them as objectionable?

I am reminded of
scene from Community. Just in reverse. And it works quite well in reverse. Don't meet your idols, they can't disappoint you if you don't give them the chance.

I saw this awhile back, it's what first shaped my opinion of Fish and why I really don't think very highly of him.

I've never heard of this "Fish" before, was it the guy in the glasses? If so what an asshole. Has he done kind of thing before? I require more information.

EDIT: And who the hell are those other people? They're idoits. I wish I didn't watch this I'm upset now. I hope you're happy OP.

Are the recent Zeldas and Marios not too hand-holdy? What exactly am I supposed to be disagreeing with? The majority of the video was people other than Fish talking, and they all happened to agree with him. Why is this video directed at Fish?

This is a witch hunt and a hate campaign. I will take no part in this.

Yeh, this.

They spoke their minds. If anyone can't handle that, that's their own issue... 'cause you should be able to handle a man with a job also having an opinion.

I actually think I agree with the sentiments too. I don't care for Japanese games.

The problem I have with that video, apart from Phil Fish, was that their criticisms of Japanese Games for being too hand-holdy are just as valid a criticism against western games. Or have we forgotten the paint by numbers FPS tutorial already?

But these guys were indie developers, and like Blow or Fish, a lot of them seem to work on the pretense that they make art house games, rather than just platformers with gussied up visual design. There's always been a bit of an arrogance among indie developers, like they see themselves as the avant-garde of the games industry and are thus exempt from criticism.

And they didn't even go that far. They were talking about modern Japanese games having already confirmed themselves as being inspired by the older games.

I got that a little bit yes. What I wondered was, have we been missing out on a bunch of indie/oldschool Japanese games that just so happened to not make it over here (because the developers, strapped for cash, didn't have the funds to translate it for an English speaking audience)? When you compare Japanese and Western mainstream games, they're both a little bit fond of your hands, to be honest. The difference might stem from Japanese games (and particularly the big series, like Mario and Zelda) being a bit older, so that there are examples of such games both before and after the hand holding fetish began. Comparing mainstream Japanese games (today) with obscure Western indie games is a bit unfair.

Captcha: patty cake. Do you see? That's something you do with your hands. Hence hand holding. Captcha is becoming sentient, I tell you.

Eh seems a bit silly to be directing this at Phil since other people were talking more but that said none of the criticisms are particular wrong or outlandish everything else there is just an opinion. Nothing more, nothing less. That said everything they said about modern Japanese mainstream games being "bad" modern Western mainstream games have in fucking spades. Only thing I flat out disagree with is unskippable dialogue as there is plenty of that shit in some western games. So yeah as said above in the thread Modern Japanese mainstream games vs Modern Western Indie games not a fair comparison.

The answer is 'yes.' Pretty much the only time you will see a Japanese indie game in English is through a fan translation, and that means most of the English-speaking gaming community will never here about them at all. A lot of Japanese indie games are made with even smaller teams and fewer resources than their Western counterparts, and a fair number of them don't even end up being sold for profit. Unless the people in that video can read Japanese, it is literally impossible for them to have any idea what they are talking about. They can't even talk about non-indie Japanese games, because a pretty significant number of those never leave Japan either.

Phil seems like the kind of guy who thinks that the whole 'asshole' persona is really cool! And decided to adopt it himself. Ya know, how it is, rather than do THIS.

"What do you think about modern Japanese games?"

"I feel they've been lacking as of late."

It's so much more EDGY and COOL to do this!

"What do you think about modern Japanese games?"

"They fucking suck!"

But what do you know!? Treat everybody like a dick and they'll treat you like a dick right back! If you decide to be a total prick to everybody all the time, but can't handle it when people are pricks right back, then you shouldn't be a prick in the first place. Phil seems like the kind of whiny little brat who can't handle it, and nothing anybody can say will ever convince me that he didn't deserve all the shit he got. Everything I've seen of him so far made it seem like he's a totally insufferable douche bag.

How about you stop going out of your way to hate him. I don't think there's a single person on the internet who'd keep up this witch hunt if they had to go through what he's gone through recently. This "fuck everyone and everything that isn't perfect forever" mindset is literally the worst part of the gaming community.

EDIT: Not saying he doesn't deserve criticism, before someone brings that up.

People are dicks. The only reason anyone cares is because they achieved some modicum of fame which people feel they can vicariously experience through discussion.
