Being a Gamer = Being a Sports fan

I find it interesting to see the contempt that a lot of gamers have for sports fans. I see a lot of similarities in both of these hobbies.

1.Being loyal
Being a sports fan is about being loyal. You have your favourite team, usually from the place you are from, and support it through good times and bad times.

Altough I hate fanboyism in gaming, it is a matter of fact. People are devoted to their console. Sega fans are probably still Sega fans today, even after they exited the console race. Console communities stick together, and sometimes even developer communites like people that support Valve for example.

2. The Importance of stats
Gamers love stats. How many of you check Metacritic to see the compiled ratings? VGchartz to see how well games stack up against each other? I know I do from time to time.

In Basketball for example, fans could be described as stat whores. Pretty much everything is recorded in games. Points, blocks, turnovers. Stats are a tangible way to compare results and argue for who is best, that's why they are so commonly referred to in sports. In the video game industry arguments are held over which games sell best and more often than I'd like, commercial success is used to argue about the quality of games.

3. The Hate

Sports fans hate each other. So much so that brawls and Hooliganism are a regular occurence in big events.

There's a reaon they call it the console 'war'. I wouldn't be surprised if Hooliganism manifests itself in some shape or form in the games industry in the next years. I could honestly imagine a group of console fans waiting at a big launch event of a popular title of the opposing console and then ambushing people that attend it. Until know verbal abuse is about as far as it gets. Luckily.

4. Sectively liking

In Football the players of the local teams are almost holy. They are loved, while opposing players of similar skill are hated. That all changes when players switch teams. When Figo, a brilliant playmaker, switched from rivals Barcelona to Real, roles were reversed. Barcelona fans felt betrayed despite his brilliant playing career and legend status in the previous years at their club. They started throwing objects and booing him whenever he played against their club.

FF XIII. How many people throw away their biases just after the purchase a new console? It's all about liking the games you support.

So anyway, what do you think? In many ways games are becoming a sort of sport in my opinion, with competing teams (consoles), rabid fans and focus on stats and successful history. Where's the love, yo? I wish we could just all get along and enjoy playing.

I am both a gamer and a sports fan (boxing, soccer, and rugby, mostly). I always wondered why I keep encountering people who treat video games as a "lifestyle" as opposed to one hobby out of many.

NUH UH!

I don't give a shit about 3 and 4. Well...4 a little, if we apply it to games. I'm not on the "Valve Rules!" train, like the rest of the site.

1. being loyal

i have to agree here... there are die-hard fans of just about everything and anything that has, or will be released (sonic fans... bethsda fans... etc...)

2. The Importants of stats

I can't say anything you've already said...

the hate

you're right, and this is a simple fact... if theres anything competetive... like say SPORTS theres always going to be hate between each sport and each team of said sport... just like PS3 people will probably hate on XBOX 360 people... and wii people will just throw money at ninteno (myself being a nintendo slave...)

4. selective liking

thats a good point... cant say anything else...

this probably didnt answer any of your questions/opinions... but it wasted 10 minutes of my time :p and thats what the internet is for!

DURP!!!

I am both a sports fan and a fan of gaming. To top it off I love sports games too like EA's Madden and NHL franchises. I agree with much of what you said but being a gamer doesn't equal being a sports fan. There are plenty of differences between the two as well.

I'm as avid a gamer as I am an American Football fan. I never play sports games though.

I never looked at it that way, but it all makes sense. I'm a VG fan, and I'm also a sports fan, and now I do notice a lot of similarities.

I agree about the similarities... except 4. Though I wouldn't be surprised if it was that way in Korea concerning Starcraft players.

That being said, I'm a gamer. Not a sports fan. I hate sports. A lot.

Now, now. I'm not either. I actually got bored with Half-life 2. I don't see why so many people like it so much.

There is quite a lot of Hooliganism in the gaming market.

I think ur right on everything there.Athough, the hate subject I dont completely agree with.I dont no if it is that i dont talk to pple like that or havent played with pple like that, but on my 360,we all agree that the 360 is supirer for the things we like. And we would all be happy to buy a PS3.So i realy dont see much with fanboyism with consels, but with games, thats a different subject...

You're linking being a sports fan with the worst aspects of being a gamer so I am inclined to disagree. It is only the loud minority who adhere to many of your points.

I do agree with the stat loving business though. But that goes along with any form of competition.

I never really looked at it that way, and it makes a lot of sense. Thanks for posting.

I can see your examples, and while they may apply to many a gamer, they don't really apply to me.

Also, I find that watching sports is as vapid as watching TV - you watch things happen and you just sit there. Unlike games, where you actually control what is going on.

erm... well... yea... maybe they seem alike... BUT!!!
gamers interact with their stuff, instead of just watching other people do it :)

most of the time at least...

I'm not especially loyal to any one console or game, I have not once cared about either my stats versus others, or games stats on reviews and websites, I don't hate people who like games and consoles I don't like, and I don't selectively like games.

I also don't like sports, so from my personal opinion I don't fit into your system.

I do see your point though, but I don't really believe in stereotyping anyone, including sports fans.

Everyone's a nerd about something.

It's kinda funny how stigmatized gamers and computer geeks at least used to be, while having the same basic enthusiasm about cars, sports or guns is just manly or cool. It seems to me there's little difference in the way all of them approach their hobbies.

A club can represent a people, a community, an ideal, a political party, a religion or a way of life. Through generations you attend and sing songs of glory in support of something that is not passing entertainment, but an extension of your being. Those truly dedicated to their club far exceed anything in gaming, not sure if that is good or bad thing.
