So I was browsing my game library and I noticed that most of the games I own today and previous there wasn't really a game about a bad guy (RPG's I didn't include so feel free to point that out). But I mean like a main character that is obviously a bad guy unlike in Shadows of Colossus where you only realize that what you did was wrong until the end. I'm sure you could put Kratos in this area but after the first one he was just angry for the sake of being angry. But really how many games are based off of the bad guy and his quest for vengeance against good guy, government, super hero, or world. Also if you could create a game about being the antagonist (Gary Oak being a good example) what kind of antagonist would it be?

The character you're playing is the protagonist. The antagonist is that character's "foil".

I'd play a villain that is cartoonishly evil. I want to have some fun with it. Being Hazama, basically.

The Overlord series is nice. Especially since 2 actually allows you to play Lawful Evil, instead of the usual 'muahahahaa! burn the women, kill all valuables and rape the cattle' Chaotic Stupid sort of evil that's usually at the bottom end of the scale in good/evil games.

OP:

Probably the dude in overlord, the guy who treats the villagers well, but if they turn on him, i'm abducting the best maidens from each village to serve in my harems.

Yes, maidens.

I think that either I misread something or you did. My point was that you were Gary Oak to Red or Blue.

This. You can be a bad guy or an anti-hero but you're still the protagonist in the story. The antagonist from your perspective would be the good guys.

But yes getting to be a bad guy in a game can be really fun for a change. No more having to protect or save people, or god forbid do any escort missions. Just wreck shit and have fun.

Well there was golden eye rogue agent for the PS2 where you play the bad guy at least as far as I know having not bothered to complete it, there might be a change of heart at the end.

I may have misread something, but to explain: The moment you take the role of Gary Oak, he becomes the protagonist. "Red/Blue" is now the antagonist.

An antagonist is only "evil" because the protagonist is usually "good". If the protagonist was evil, the antagonist would be good.

Evil Genius on the PC. You basiclly ended up with James Bond invading your lair and had to dispose of him.

I would sit back, do my job, keep the only weapon thatc an destroy me neatly in my private lockbox, won't take any pricness hostage, will always shoot first, never tell the hero my plans before leaving them in a tricky death-mashine and my doomsday-device will have a big, red, shiny button saying "Self.Destruct", while acctually triggering a row of hidden turrets to open fire.

So in short, i will get the job done and bang my hot princess of evil once everything is "done".

I'd love to play the bad guy in a Batman game. We came close with the Joker maps on Arkham Asylum.

You misunderstood what he was saying. He was correcting your improper use of the word Antagonist; when you said about wanting to play as the 'bad guy' means you're wanting to play as the 'Antagonist'. Such as in GTA or Saints Row, you play a gangster who can mow down scores of civilians. You're still the Protagonist, despite being a bad guy. The law enforcement, who in reality is the lesser of two evils, is the Antagonist.

Haven't there been many games where you got to be "evil?" Infamous, for example. Then again, I guess that game didn't do "evil" as good as one would wish it had...

Ah, I see where I went wrong. Sorry bout that little misunderstanding. What I was simply saying what that, "What if the protagonist was the antagonist". The Overlord series didn't come to mind when I made this. It just seems like there are to many "Goody Goody" main characters. In Fallout 3 you either were an angel in disguise or a psychotic mass murder, not really much choice there if you ask me.

Being evil in computer games is never the way I want it. Luckily I play P&P games with a group of likeminded people and we play evil without the comically poor way it is handled in most computer games.

Evil Genius, Overlord and Prototype are games where you are pretty much unavoidably evil. And there are plenty of games that let you choose your alignment, never really works as a mechanic though.

Nitpicking

OT: I think that like others have stated before i'd go for a cartoony villain. Complete with pre-recorded action phrases like: "Nothing can stop me now!", "I am INVINCIBLE!", "This can't be!", and then the "NOOOOOOOOO" for later on.

Saints Row 2, who the hell says your the Antagonist, I think im an protagonist that protects the citizens from Corruption, but also kills them because he wants to have fun and doesnt care about anything else...BIG FUN, at the exepense of other people...
