This is my list of the top 5 online games that I've had the most fun with and that really stood out out as gems for me.
[HEADING=1]5. Team Fortress 2[/HEADING]
A perfect example of a refined game. Its friendly guise hides a game with deep depth which you can enjoy as both a casual and competitive player.With nine different classes you're bound to find one that suits your play, the spy if you want to be a sneaky bastard, the heavy for some nice loud tankers, even a drunken scotsman with a grenade launcher for well.. those people who want to play a drunken scotsman with a grenade launcher... its fun with a nice selection of maps which reward teamwork. All these features blend well together with the great art style that makes the game look great and the gore hilarious.
[HEADING=1]4. League of Legends[/HEADING]
I've only just began playing this and its becoming an all time favourite. Its a free game based on the succesful DotA mod but with a number of changes to speed up gameplay and make it more accesible to new players and old alike. The characters are all each unique for example: a sad crying mummy, a midget riding a yeti and even a goth child that can summon a giant flaming bear (The Tibbers surprise!). I wasn't too keen on the pace of the game at the start but I have so come to love it, speed and intensity rule the day. Teamwork plays a major role such as the art of ganking, thus a big plus for anyone looking for a competitive enviroment. Theres a number of RPG elements thrown in to expand the thinking put into a build, you can get runes and you also have a tree of masteries which expand the gameplay beyond single match levelups. The graphics are cell shaded looking slightly cartoonish but it goes brilliantly with the atmosphere of the game.
Again this is a free game so give it a go.
Special mention to Demigod aswell, another DotA type game worth a look if you enjoy this.
[HEADING=1]3. Counter Strike Source[/HEADING]
A classic first person shooter, but im more interested in the fantastic mod community that have truly made CSS a quality experience for me. Yes the vanilla gameplay is great on its own but when you have a choice of zombie rampage in a morder based map; thats when you know you got a good deal.
[HEADING=1]2. Sins of a solar empire[/HEADING]
This is one game that will absorb you. When I get some friends together and we start up sins, literally hours pass by...but thats a good thing! Its a game in which you can zoom smoothly from a one-man fighter craft to a star-studded map of the galaxy and meaningfully direct
your empire from anywhere in between. The battles are spectacular, you have thick clouds of fighter and bomber squadrons swooping in for kills, capital ships shooting of their railguns in all directions and repair craft desperatly salvaging that last ship. That aswell as the diplomatic and econonimcal aspects of your empire are actually very simple to understand aswell.
There is no better feeling that backstabbing your friend and nuking four of his planets in quick succession before he goes "DUDE SERIOUSLY".
[HEADING=1] 1. World In Conflict[/HEADING]
This is my favourite game of all time and the one that really got me into the true spirit of online gaming. An alternative timeline in which the Soviet Union invades the USA and Western Europe to avoid its collapse. The singeplayer is "meh" but thats far from what wic is about.
Firstly the game has an excellent interface, massgate is ingenious in its accesibilty and ease of use; you can find a match in little to no time at all and with the drop in play it becomes so much more easier. The graphics are great and can rival that of any big budget title on the market. Unlike most online RTS titles, the reliance on teamwork here is huge. Playing with a disorganised team or setting out on your own will demonstrate this, as you'll quickly be decimated by a better-organised foe. The balance is supurb and has been firmly tweaked to perfection with a great selection of maps on offer.
Thus this forumla is perfect for competitive play, the game is best played with a clan to get the best experience and again due to wics great interface clans were a major aspect of the community, unfortunatly at this time the clan population of wic is dwindling and its becoming ever so harder to get that true experience. There are still roughly around to 10-16 fully populated pub servers aswell for anyone looking for a more laid back game this is also it.
