I recently got a box of CD's (25 for $25) and have been listening to them. Most of the bands are very obscure but a good number of them are enjoyable. With this, I have really enjoyed a band called Virus Nine. They are amazing especially for a band that came in a discount box. Why haven't I heard of them until now? I've shown my friends this and one said "It's the best band I've never heard of." hence the title.

my question to you, the escapist community is, have you ever discovered an obscure/underrated band or artist that blew your mind?

Sorry i can't post a link. my connection is too slow to load YouTube videos.

Nightwish was that way for me, and then I found out they were huge from years ago... I mean shit, when I found them, they already had like six CDs out.

There was this band, back in the day, that was a one-hit-wonder that went by the name Revis. They broke up shortly after their fist commercial release, but I think their music was pretty good, if you like that mellow alt-rock type stuff. Some extremely underrated bands I would just throw out there for the sake of sharing music would be Eve6, Bloc Party, Reel Big Fish, and that's all I've got for now. I'm sure I could probably come up with more, but my music likings are all over the place.

I've been buying some old industrial/synth/electronic compilation albums recently, (a few dozen), and I've made an effort to listen to every song on each album at least once. Something I've noticed, is that I generally either like all of the songs on the album to some degree...or hate them all with maybe one or two exceptions. The variation is great, though, and I've found a few additional artists whose music I've also taken the effort to track down and collect along side my other favorite artists, ;) I'd name artists, but I don't see much point...as hardly any of them have a single song uploaded on YouTube.

Recently, the Ty Segall Band. Some really cool Alt-Garage rock, something I really I love. It's fun to find a new band playing a genre you like well.

My personal favorite off their album.

I just saw them for the first time live a couple weeks ago. It was a pretty rad show. Speaking of that particular venue and underrated bands, a couple months prior to that I saw Mindless Self Indulgence live. It was wild.

I know how you feel the band that inspired this thread doesn't even have a proper Wikipedia page. just a list of members. and an incomplete discography.

A great melodic death band that morphed into prog metal before calling it quits.
I used to hate their prog phase but I rather enjoy it now that I'm older.

Finntroll isn't very obscure but I found them on my own accord so it counts. I also enjoy Phil Keaggy's guitar work.

I mean, it's heavy metal pirates!

I heard about them like four years ago, but apparently they're big enough to do some opening for some well known bands now. And I know a lot of people here have heard about them.

Also Delain and Amberian Dawn. Fans of Nightwish will love them!

I'm utterly SHOCKED by the amount of people who don't know who Portishead are, and I hate myself for not discovering them sooner. They were codifiers of trip-hop!

Too bad they work on Valve time.

For an actually obscure artist, I really, REALLY like the work of Eskmo, who I discovered through Cyriak.

My brother won himself a free copy of Minecraft with this song from a Reddit contest of the same name. My hipster points finally payed off for him at least.

I hope to god you're playing along.

Strange choice. Even my mother knows who Ty Segall is. I wouldn't peg him as "obscure" by any means.
A. Don't worry. I'm kidding.

B. Man, I wish I lived where you live. No one here seems to know who he is.

Careful what you wish for. She knows his music just well enough to badmouth it like the tasteless philistine she is.
For shame, for shame.
