Best Character Creator

Recently, I have taken an interest in art, as in drawing. So far, I have been doing it for about 10 hours a week, and am getting to the point where my people look like people. Now, I do not yet think that I am at the level that I can create a character unassisted, but I still would like to. As such, I have been using character creators in several games as a basis for my characters.

Now, I have a rather unique problem of my creators not being quite detailed enough, so now I feel like asking you, my fellow escapists. What game has the best character creation options for wither males or females? Personally, nothing is really off the table, as a friend has already recommended several 3D customization based eroges....

For varied there's the Saints Row series and Dragon's Dogma. They're nice.
As for realistic and detailed though... Not sure. Saints Row 2 has a lot of choices but it's not particularly real, and a lot of MMOs have the detailed creation, but kind of fall apart when, well...

Hmm, I seem to recall a boxing game (or another sports game, but I think it was boxing) of some sort having the most detailed character creation. You could easily make yourself or anybody you know in there. That was...a while ago, though - probably 4 years or so. And I can't recall the name. So...just giving you the heads up.

But something more useful - probably the NBA games are the best I can think of right now.

The MMO All Points Bulletin had a pretty good Character Creator if I recall correctly although some of the options may be locked behind a pay gate now that the game is F2P

Dragon's Dogma and Saints Row 2 creators are very nice.
Phantasy Star Online 2's creator is going to be freaking insane from the looks of things.

Probably the most in-depth, complex cosmetic character creator I've seen was in a PS2 Tiger Woods golf game.

CoV/CoH takes my vote. Mix matching the suits, accessories and powers made me spend a ton of time at the character creation window.

Didn't EVE Online tout some pretty crazy character creator?

Phantasy Star Online 2 has a pretty nice character creator too. Both effeminate anime boys and fat grandmas are possible.

Amen to that. It's a sad, sad think they decided to shut it down.

Also, Morrowind. Even though character creation was sub par at best, the amount of customizability when it came to equipment is still awesome to this day.

Having played PSO2 (english patch, woo!) I can say that their creator is quite insane. Sadly they lack clothing options.

Anyway, my vote would be for the various Sims games, as they revolve around that sort of thing.

You wouldn't go wrong with EVE Online. You can also pose them and add a bunch of lighting options.

The subscription might be a deal breaker for though but you can get a 14 day trial just to check it out

While not necessarily a great game or substitute for CoH, Champions Online also has a very robust creator in terms of having simply a huge amount of costume parts to choose from. Other options such as facial features are... lacking though.

I'll throw in my vote for Saints Row 2 and Dragon's Dogma as well, and the Sims games (especially if you can find a site that has mods).

All Points Bulletin's creator isn't bad, but limited if you're not willing to pay/grind.

Saints Row 2 is one of my favorites, though, for the sheer fact that gender in that game is on a slider. Dragon's Dogma's got a lot of options, but there's not a lot in terms of face sculpting beyond the presets, and SR2 simply has more options overall, especially for clothing.

I've seen a bit about EVE Online's character creator, and it looks good, but that's not a game I'm interested in and as far as I'm aware the creator isn't available as a separate download the way Spore's creature creator was.

Also want to say I'm in the same boat as you, OP. I love drawing my characters, but character creators are a great way to flesh out a character's appearance, and screenshots can be especially helpful with details such as tattoos. By the way, what are the eroges you were recommended? Were the creators for them any good? I'm not fussed about the content, as long as it has a lot of options.

Champions Online has one of the best (if not the best) character creators I've ever seen. I don't even play the game anymore, but I still go on from time to time just to fiddle around with the character creator.

The best I've played are in Saints Row (2 or 3) and APB Reloaded. APB is free and Saints Row the Third has a free "Initiation Station" character creator so you can try either of those risk free.

I can't stand the game's business model, but Champion's character creator is really freakin' robust. It takes a little bit of work to get used to all the functionality, though.

Additionally, most of the premium costume pieces are accessible in the editor, you just can't take them with you into the world when you're done, so if you're just looking for a costume and not a background, it shouldn't cost you anything.
