Intro cinematics are as common as anything else in gaming, and like everything else in gaming everyone has their favorites as well as their picks for best ever.

One problem I've found is that there are two seperate entities, Game Intros (anything that shows before you press anything) and Campaign/Career Intros. What am I on about? Why I'd be happy to explain by using a game everyone here should know Mass Effect 2. Now I know what you're saying, "Hey dumbass, ME2 doesn't have a 'Game' Intro." Well, by the definition I have established, the cinematic doesn't have to come up immediately, it still counts if you have to wait a minute for it to show up, as is the case with Mass Effect, the Kingdom Hearts games, and any other title you can think of where you might have to wait a minute before pressing start. Campaign Intros are really can't come any other way than up front upon mode selection, but again my definition differs, and I state for these purposes, any cinematics that occur before the tutorials kick in, such as in ME2 where you have the initial video, then the VERY brief walkthrough of the dying SR-1 Normandy, then character creation, and finally the tutorial. For me, everything up to Miranada giving you orders would count. No, you can't argue it.

So with that, what do you, the members of the Escapist, count as you're favorite/the best intro cinematic in gaming.

Here are mine, one of each just for show.

As of now this is still my favorite. Others have come close, and I would have put the GT5 2.0(XL) except for the fact you have to wait through the piano piece that shouldn't be there.

(Sigh)This one was tough, because there were so many to choose from. ME2 was an obvious choice, but I'm trying to end the honeymoon with ME2. Batman Arkam Asylum was another, but in the end, my mind just keeps coming back to this. Why? Hell if I know.

P.S.: Now, just so you know, a gameplay demo doesn't count as a cinematic, so games like Super Mario Bros. on the NES don't count.

I regard Bioshock as the undisputed and nigh unassailable king of video game intros. As far as I'm concerned, no other game intro is even in the same league.

Second place goes to Half Life 2 for excellent and economical scene-setting through environment details and observation.

Mass Effect 2 gets a brief mention for that one moment where you step out into the silent vacuum of the destroyed CIC. Prototype gets a mention due to the sheer fun factor. After some embarrassingly shitty but mercifully brief video game dialogue the game throws you straight into the chaos with all your powers. The following ten minutes are the most fun in the game. Sadly, the rest of the experience never measured up.

Well, lets get these out of the way

I honestly let this play all the way through pretty much every time I load up MGS3, that beginning drum beat always gets me so pumped up.

And the story intro:

"Does this pantywaist know what he's doing?"

I though Mass Effect 2's intro was horribly designed. It's literally the only time I've wanted to shut off a game and stop playing because of its intro.

Silent Hill 1
I agree on Kingdom Hearts.
Someone else already mentioned another good one, Bioshock.

Mass Effect 2 for me,

Your Shepard lost the the blackness of space with a truly beautiful piece of music drawing you into a superb game!

I actually really like the intro of the first Borderlands. It sets the tone so well for a rascally, western-style adventure, and the music fits perfectly.

The Witcher 2 intro cinematic was pretty badass.

And although it might not be the best, the Ace Combat 5 intro is still my favourite.

Every Kindgom Hearts opening is amazing, and I think they get better with each game (barring Re:CoM, Days and Re:coded, which just use montages of cutscenes from previous games). This one is especially great, making wonderful use of the 3DS's two screens and an orchestral version of "Simple and Clean." It really sums the game up well.

Now I want to play it again. :I

It's been over ten years now since I first saw it, and yet still the intro for Thief: The Dark Project remains among the most stylish and downright cool intro cinematic I've ever seen.

Yeah, true. But my favourites in that series have to be KHI & II since you have the epic first few moments in the Station of Awakening.

OT:
It starts about a minute in, btw. Get all that cinematography in ya FMV.

I'd put Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, the MGSs, Bioshocks and all at close seconds. The winner for me has to be Uncharted 2. It grips you very quickly, and perfectly establishes the precedent for the rest of the game!

While I loved it the first time, I've grown less fond of it after many playthroughs. I can't skip it and it's so slow since I know everything that happens.
