There were a lot of good offerings this year. Here's my top 10. I'll justify my decisions later.

10. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
9. Left 4 Dead
8. Fable 2
7. Gears of War 2
6. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
5. Guitar Hero World Tour
4. Mario Kart
3. Grand Theft Auto 4
2. Rock Band 2
1. Fallout 3

This has been done countless times before, but out of pure recklessness, here is my number one of 2008:

Left 4 Dead

Having bought more games ever this year than I ever before, just about, the best one I played was Gears of War 2, hands down. It is just an achingly well designed game, and a delight to play. We've been blessed with a number of good 'uns this year, though, and Left 4 Dead, GTA 4, Fallout 3 and FIFA 09 were all highlights for me.

This thread has been done to death for the last few months.

Its a close call between Braid and Left 4 Dead. Probley Braid, as Left 4 Dead doesn't have much staying power for an online game.

Sure it must've been done to death, but not by me... at least, not on this forum. So:

1. Fallout 3
2. Portal: Still Alive
3. Rock Band 2
4. Braid

Braid would've been higher if it didn't frustrate me to the point of self-immolation.
