I've been recently trying out a bunch of neat Half-Life/Half-Life 2 mods like Cry of Fear, and am really enjoying them. What are your thoughts on the most entertaining mods and the scariest mods that I should try?

The best PC mod of all time is the one that removes GFWL from Fallout 3. That is the king of all mods.

My favourite mod is the Europa Barbarorum mod for Rome: Total War. It pretty much takes the game, shakes it up and improves on everything while adding a tonne of new content. They also had actual historians well versed in the time period to help with doing it so that it was done right. A really sublime mod for sure.

The Total Faction Warfare mod for STALKER: Clear Sky was just an awesome mod, it is still in development and is having some cool new features added constantly.

Why natural selection of course, it's my favourite multiplayer game ever, and it was a completely free mod! And they seem to be making good progress on NS2!

Not including Team Fortress because it spawned TF2, Trouble in Terrorist Town for Gmod. Excellent gamemode.
That or Poker Tower Defence for SCII.
Although Shopper for Worms: Armageddon was pretty damn addictive.
The Doom mod that gives you unlimited random levels is genius.

There are loads more I'd consider amongst the best, but that'll do for now.

For Heroes 3 of Might and Magic = "Wake of The Gods" Mod is fucking baddass

For Half Life 2 Engine = "The Stanley Parable" EPIC deconstruction of videogaming tropes

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. did it better.

The Complete Mods for the STALKER games.
Misery for STALKER: Call of Pripyat.
The Stanley Parable for HL2.
Research and Development for HL2.
Dear Esther for HL2.
Easy TuTu for Baldur's Gate.
Europa Barbarorum for Rome Total War.
The Source Code Project for FreeSpace 2.
Garrys Mod.

Those were the one that sprang to mind. Plenty more out there.

For Empire At War, I'd also recommend Phoenix Rising for the sheer size of everything, Republic At War, Thrawn's Revenge and Absolute Corruption 2.4

Well there's a mod called Dawn of War Pro for Dawn of War Soulstorm that totally rebalances the whole game so it's not broken. That's why if I ever made a strategy game there's no way in hell I wouldn't add modding to it since modders can do way more than any developer.

Civilization IV has some excellent mods, like Fall From Heaven (fantasy, based on the old Masters of Magic) and Planetfall (sci fi, based on Alpha Centauri and even uses that games audio files).

Battlefield 2 is an old game, but thanks to a mod called Allied Intent Xtended (AIX) it's still one of the best shooters to run at a LAN party. The mod adds lots of maps, vehicles, and weapons, but most of all it adds good computer controlled bots so you can get 64 player matches. Vanilla BF2 only allows 16 bots, and they are terrible because DICE didn't spend much time giving them AI paths through the maps. AIX allows up to 64 bots and on the difficult AI settings they should challenge most everyone.

I've been meaning to try out Thrawn's Revenge for a while. Thanks for the recommendations.

Having only downloaded a few mods for Oblivion...I really liked Hoarforst Castle and Ruined-Tail's Tale.

The 1.13 mod for Jagged Alliance 2.
The Stainless Steel mod for Total War: Medieval 2.
The Complete mods for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Probably the three I've had the most fun with. Mount and Blade has a lot of awesome mods as well.

Lord of the Rings: Total War for Rome: Total War.

SWBF conversion pack for Star Wars Battlefront 2 (also, the huuuuuuge number of awesome custom maps and mappacks for it).

PROJAM for Alien Vs Predator 2.
