I know Half Life 2 came out well before 2008 but its graphics were revolutionary for the time. Around 2008, PC games started looking pretty amazing, pretty routinely.

My best PC experience may have been Skyrim, that I modded the heck out of (really cool replacing the moon with the Death Star!). I tried Fallout Las Vegas and modded it some but that broke the game. I never got to Vegas even! Tried some on Grand Theft Auto 4 (not the prettiest game ever).

What have your best experiences modding PC games been since 2008? Links to trusted mod sights?

What kind of modding experience are you looking for? Specifically graphics? Or are you looking more for game-play overhauls and the like?

BTW, it doesn't take mods to break New Vegas, the game was never NOT broken.

Fallout New Vegas, but like all mod-able games I don't take it seriously anymore. I mean how can you possibly get immersed in protecting a caravan when Twilight Sparkle and Chris Redfield just fought off an Chaos Marine invasion in a Silent Hill fog using guns that shoot exploding chickens?

After that anything the game tries to do just seems silly and pointless.

And I just use Nexus Mods.

Well, Skyrim is the first and only game so far I have done anything with modding. As an introduction though it was a pretty pleasant experience overall.

When I first started out, I figured I get a couple of texture mods and maybe expand some cities and be done, oh if I only knew how far down the rabbit hole I would go.

I'm not sure when the transition from a few scattered mods turned into the monstrosity of a load order I have now, but it has been an interesting experience to say the least.

At this point I'm honestly more excited for the modding aspects of Fallout 4 than I am for the game itself, though I am obviously excited for more Bethesda wandery, looty goodness as well.

As far as reliable sites go, right now I only really go to Nexus Mods: [link]www.nexusmods.com[/link]

My experience with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. modding community over the years has been beyond flawless. In my opinion, even the mighty Nexus, whom I adore for all of my Bethesda modding needs, pales in comparison. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl's modding community blew me away with "Complete 2009" and "L.U.R.K.", and after delivering similar experiences for Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat, the "Misery" mod completely redefined it all over again.

EDIT: All of these came from ModDB. Not sure if they're still kickin' around; it's been awhile.

I wouldn't say 'most' modded, but X-COM Enemy Unknown has some absolute quality mods, which I shuffle under 'best'. 'Long War' stands really out to me... I should go back and shoot some sectoids, I guess.

Both. I'd love G-d mode, all weapons, all powers as I did in Skyrim. I had visuals in Skyrim (turn a horse into a convertable 1970 oldsmobile) and graphics sharpening.
BTW, it doesn't take mods to break New Vegas, the game was never NOT broken.
Oh. Explains some things. Fallout 3 had problems. I eventually stoped playing my PS3 version after 150 hours as it would just freeze up on start up. But I had my fun first. Not so much Vegas.

Thanks! I'll look for them! S.T.A.L.K.E.R is one of the better reviewed games I do not have. I'll have to rectify that!

Most modded game I've seen in my life might've been bridge commander.
Amazing what people will do with a full-fledged python scripting system and extensive engine script hooks. XD

That's only tangentially relevant I suppose, given it's a 13 year old game.
I suppose I shouldn't really have commented, given I can't really think of anything recent.
Don't really do much with mods anymore...

Enjoy. :) Just keep in mind, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise isn't the least bit forgiving. The "Complete" overhauls even the odds a tad by making the enemies just as fragile as you are, but you'll still be using quick save/quick load more often than you fire a weapon, and this is exacerbated 10-fold by "Misery", which more than lives up to its namesake.

That said, the environments, atmosphere, story; they all make it worthwhile, creating an oppressive but fantastic world as opposed to an exercise in frustration.

Atleast when it comes to NV, it never was too serious in the first place, especially when you've picked the glorious WWW perk.

Although i have huge respect for the modding community, I've never been that much into modding myself. That said Grand Theft Auto can be really impressive when it comes to mods, especially when taking it's checkered history with PC gaming into account.
Plenty of mods that can make your GTA prettier, funnier or more batshit insane(if one Trevor just doesn't quite make it for you).

Modded Minecraft such as Feed The Beast and others have ruined Minecraft for me. It's hard to play the original Minecraft nowadays without jetpacks, ore duplication, chisels, machinery, reactors, and other fun things. I haven't even played the laser-fish update because mods make MC1.7 that much more interesting.

I understand people like their Skyrims and mods that 'fix' games, but modded Minecraft is in a league of its own.

Mount and Blade Warband has multiple mods that are essentially entirely new games with significantly more depth.

It also has tools that allow you to easily modify troops, items, and plenty of other aspects of the game. For example, battlesizer allows you to increase the 150 character cap up to some pretty ridiculous numbers. Being right in the thick of a 600 man battle is one of the greatest things I've experienced in gaming. Whether you're leading a cavalry charge in a flank, commanding a volley, or standing next to one of your companions in a huge shield wall, it's incredible either way. Sure the graphics are bad, but the sheer spectacle of everything more than makes up for it IMO.

Uh oh. I might find myself dropping $60 on this, especially if there is a FPS mode for PC.

Agree with you on Skyrim, the mods added an utterly insane amount of replayability to that game. Like others have mentioned, Nexus Mods is my go-to source.

X-Com deserves honorable mention to me, but only because of how excellent the "Long War" mod was.

I'd also nominate "Torchlight 2", which added tons of superb mods as well as new (shockingly well done and balanced) character classes.

One of my favourite mods in recent years was unfortunately Mechwarrior: Living Legends for Crysis and Crysis: Warhead

Sadly it got shut down and Mechwarrior: Online hasn't proven to be nearly as fun to casually pick up and play from time to time.

Overall my most modded games would have to be Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 as well as the Baldur's Gate games, but those hardly count as recent. Mount & Blade as well but that's already been mentioned.

Couldn't agree more. Between Warband, bf1942 and UT, I've got just about all the amazing dedicated mods I'll ever need.

My most modded game would be Dragon Age: Origins. I actually don't like the graphics improvement mods for it though, they might not be the best in this age but the work perfectly for the game to me.

The most things I use are little tweaks such as making the Dog a summon, removing the permanent aura visual effects from certain buffs, and yes Natural Bodies.

Coming a close second though would be Mass Effect 3. Getting it out of the way, yes I do use an ending mod. But it's things like texture replacement mods for certain armours to make them Alliance colours instead of Cerberus.

Pretty much anything made by Bethesda has a great modding scene. I might think that the vanilla games are pretty shallow, but you can always count on the community to do something about that, and add in some quality content.

Dawn of War is an even better game with mods. There is one that adds in a whole Tyranid playable race, and my personal favourite, Annihilation for Dark Crusade, that just adds on to what is already there, and makes the game a lot more fun to play.
