i have been oddly wondering what movie has the best soundtrack, i know it caters to the individual but it's been bugging me. i know you have your 2001s and classical soundtracks but then you also have alone in the dark and iron man,and do musicals count?

For me so far this year, it's been the Tron: Legacy soundtrack.
Best of all time, I think it's a toss up between Lord of the Rings (Yes, all three) or Dreamworks's Prince of Egypt soundtrack and score. At least for me, subjectively.
That's the problem though with this thread. It's all subjective. I don't like rap or post-90s non-Norwegian, non-Japanese metal, so a soundtrack featuring rap or metal heavily won't appeal to me, but will definitely appeal to others.

I am going to throw out some original sound-tracks:

The Dark Knight: Zimmer & Newton Howard are on top form, and they really nail the disturbing yet tragic feel of the Joker in their 'themes' for him. There is one piano section in 'Why So Serious?' that is pretty much the tragedy of the Joker's origin story from 'The Killing Joke' in musical form. Amazing. The main 'Batman/Hero' theme is fucking rad, too.

Sunshine: I like soundtracks that can be listened back to on their own and manage to evoke the majority of the movie in images. A sign of a good and effective score. John Murphy deffinately manages that here. And of course 'On the Surface of the Sun' has become so famous, and rgiht fully so. So uplifting, yet eerily scary.

Requiem for a Dream: Clint Mansell works wonders for this movie. The soundtrack is probably the best thing about that movie aside from Ellen Burstyn's incredible performance. The main 'Requiem' theme, accompanying the ending of the movie is so stark, it simply cannot be 'unseen/heard'.

Star Wars: Need I say anymore? Episode V's is my personal favourite, but I love the entire series' scores. Too many notable moments to point out. *nerd-gasms*

On a side note, I saw Star Wars in Concert earlier this year. Very, very cool.

Lord of the Rings.

I'm also enjoying Tron Legacy at the moment, but Lord of the Rings takes the cake for depth. So many leitmotifs, man!

Last of the Mohicans is epic

Also, The Last Samurai. Seriously, from four minutes onwards, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on end.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly. The scores are phenominal. They are classics that don't sound classic, they have a bizarre western feel to them but don't follow the same tunes as generic westerns. Love the theme song.
I'll agree to this one!

The composer was Ennio Morricone. He did the music for nearly all of Sergio Leone's films (Including the 'Man with no Name' trilogy)

Well, its tricky.

Best compiled soundtrack: The Crow

For original sountracks theres too many. Look at Blade Runner and LotR, The Dark Knight and Empire. The varied nature makes it impossible to narrow to one.

But matching perfectly a moment in music history, cultural underground, with visuals in film to make a fixed sound capsule in time: The Crow.

Saving Private Ryan had a good score, LotR was incredible.

Also liked Scott Pilgrim vs. the World's soundtrack, especially the Sex Bob-om songs.

I love that film so much but its been so long since i saw it to remember the sound track, makes me sad :(.
For me though, has to be Jurassic Park. I found it on spotify and discovered it made whatever you were doing atleast 4X more epic

The 13th Warrior and Medicine Man, composed by Jerry Goldsmith. Oh, and Hanz Zimmer, no matter what movie it is.

Tron Legacy's is pretty damn good from what I've heard.
Lord of the Rings and Scott Pilgrim are also on the list, though if it isn't cheating due to most of it being Tchaikovsky, I'll also add Black Swan's to the list.
