Books are are hundreds of pages long, with plenty of text and description. Sometimes, however, a single line strikes you right in the gut. Maybe its a badass boast that makes you grin ear to ear. Maybe its an unexpected word that hammers home the emotions felt by the characters. Regardless, the phrase sums up everything you need to know, and it does it quickly and powerfully.

For me, one of the more memorable ones is from Watchmen. Rorschach is a very quotable character, but his best moment comes when he's locked in prison, and a prisoner attempts to murder him. In the book, Rorshach quickly dispatches him, and gives us this wonderful line:

Mass Effect 3 delivered a double whammy for me. The first is with the Illusive Man. As he lies, dying, he looks out and stares at Earth, shining like a jewel in space, and gives his last line of dialogue. He's still a villain, but it really helps cement his personality and motivation, and makes him more sympathetic. The other is Legions last line, after Tali stabs him with a knife, and he prepared to die. It was a particularly poignant moment, sense it forced you to really consider whether you had just killed a sentient life form.

Which line from a book, movie, fame, or other story delivered a lot of meaning with only a few words?

My Motto (listed on my profile page and will appear at the top for those of you with PubClub every once in a while) is still one of my favorite lines in a game (by coincidence, it is also Mass Effect 3)

"Had to be me, someone else might have gotten it wrong"

Eleven words but one of the strongest sentence ever stated. It might sound cheesy and stupid but seriously...those are words to live by. Every day, work on something and improve yourself. Get something in your life that you can do so well that you are the go-to for that thing because if you don't do it...well...someone else might get it wrong...

There's the classic from Aliens, which is the big punch after the awesome introduction of the powerloader. It's even funnier because the queen reacts with a hiss as if she's saying "You're the *****!"
watch?v=ZbaENZP-5a0

There was also the scene where Ripley's interrogating Newt. This was when Newt was tolerable and not screaming all the time and she delivers the message of futility. It's harsh hearing this from a kid, especially when she's right.

Then there's this scene. I wasn't that big a fan of the Mentalist, but it was a fun show that made me giggle. Then this scene came out of nowhere and was far better than it had any right to be. Even if it was done against the wishes of the writers. I'm talking about when the lead character has his hand on the bad guy's throat. It's straight and to the point, showing how cold the lead can be and what the bad guy has been reduced to.

Very true. That is a powerful quote. Mass Effect 3 had a bunch of good lines in it.

I have a book full of quotes that I like. Things that are famous, funny, or just stuck in my head for some reason or another. I can't say I have a favorite quote. Two popped into my head though when I took half a second to think.

"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum." --Nada, They Live.

"You do not count days! You do not count miles! Count only the number of Germans you have killed!" --Russian officer in one of the Call of Duty games. I always liked the idea behind that line. Not whole-sale slaughter, but the idea of, "Get it done, no matter what!" The way it is said in the game just gets my blood pumping.

One of my favorite lines comes from Les Miserables (well, the Denny translation), while discussing Napoleon: "The Sunrise is an act of daring".
Another powerful one is from Grim Fandango
"Through this dark portal, an innocent man shall pass. And arrive on the other side, innocent still- but colder of heart."
The kind of line that sends a chill down your spine, even when you have no idea of the context and can't appreciate what it means- also, weirdly, it was the only line in the whole game that (in the subtitles) was in quotation marks, but I haven't been able to find who or what it was quoting, and my emails to Doublefine have gone unanswered. Anyone here know?

Also, if you want more of these, look up Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thurdsay. It's chock full of 'em.

I have some....

These are from games and not all have deep meanings , they are just the ones that are memorable...
I could write pages for best quotes from books....

"Even in a book of lies sometimes you find truth. There is indeed a season for all things and now that I see you flesh-to-flesh and blood-to-blood I know I cannot raise my hand against you. But know this, you are my greatest disappointment. Does your master hear me? Atlas! You can kill me, but you will never have my city. My strength is not in steel and fire, that is what the parasites will never understand. A season for all things! A time to live and a time to die, a time to build... and a time to destroy!"
-Andrew Ryan , Bioshock .

Me being the Discworld lover that I am, some of my favorite quotes come from there:

"For example, one time, the great philosopher Lyn Tin Wheedle was asked "Why are you here?" and the reply took three years."
Line describing the difficulty in summaring the book before, The Light Fantastic

This quote I love because it's the perfect summary of my dad. I can ask him a small question about something, and then he goes on talking about it for ages. It actually gets a bit hard to listen after a while...

"The trouble with witches is that they never run away from things they hate. And the trouble with small furry animals in a corner is that, just occasionally, one of them's a mongoose."
Description of Magrat Garlick, Witches Abroad

Excellent quote about one of the characters who is frequently described as a "wet hen" and "a small furry animal in a corner". Just because it's small and furry doesn't mean that it isn't dangerous. Like people, really.

"An axe isn't a holy symbol, you silly little priest."
"*dejected* Oh...*lighting up* Then let's make it one!" *SLASH*

Count de Magpyr and Mightily Oats, Carpe Jugulum

Symbolism is in the eye of the beholder sometimes. That is all.

And from the same book:

"Everywhere I look, I see something holy."

In context, this becomes a really powerful quote. (The second time it's used, anyway.) A priest who struggles with his faith finally finds it again in the form of a compromise between the old teachings and the new teachings.

I have tons more that I can't remember right now, since the Discworld books are so quotable.

I just want to throw in one from my favorite manga, Detective Conan:

"I don't understand reasons for killing people, and neither do I care. But for saving another person, no rational thought is needed."

Basically, good deeds and helping another human, regardless of who they are, don't need particular reasons or thought to it; It's just something people do. True, this quote isn't always applicable and might fall flat at times (Saving a serial killer from certain death that just might kill you afterwards may not be the greatest idea), but it moreso talks about the pure goodness of certain people rather than the person they've saved.

Pure genius in every word of Pratchett's work.
But some of my favourites from the man himself:-

Evolution was far more thrilling to me than the biblical account. Who would not rather be a rising ape than a falling angel? To my juvenile eyes, Darwin was proved true every day. It doesn't take much to make us flip back into monkeys again.

Over the centuries, mankind has tried many ways of combating the forces of evil... prayer, fasting, good works and so on. Up until Doom, no one seemed to have thought about the double-barrel shotgun. Eat leaden death, demon.

Sometimes it is better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness.

As someone with four cats can attest to, this is by far the truest think ever spoken:-
In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.

And my all time favourite:-
There is a rumour going around that I have found God. I think this is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys, and there is empirical evidence that they exist.

From Amadeus. The composer Salieri has greatly resented Mozart, who seemed more talented than him, and his jealousy and resentment have seen him institutionalised.

One of my favorites is from Dune, from Paul to Reverend Mother Mohiam
Paul: Don't try your powers on me. Try looking into that place where you dare not look, you'll find me there staring back at you.
Reverend Mother Mohiam: You musn't speak...
Paul: [Using the Voice] SILENCE!
[she falls back against several Guild Workers, almost knocked over by the sheer power of Paul's words]
Paul: I remember your gom jabbar, now you'll remember mine. I can kill with a word.

Also, the Litany Against Fear. I love that one.

"I will not fear, fear is the mindkiller, fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear, I will allow it to pass over me and through me, and when it is passed, I will turn the Inner Eye and see it's path. And where it has been, there shall be nothing, only I shall remain."

From The Boondocks:
After catching A Pimp Named Slickbacks pimp slap hand with a badass belt whip action.
Grandad: You ain't gonna HIT no woman in MY house!
APNS: What woman sir? This here's a ho.
Grandad, with a look of pure ass whoopin on his face. "Not in THIS house she's not!" *badass music plays*
I loved Grandad because of that scene. xD

Slightly NSFW due to language.

Robert Heinlein:

A human should be able to : *A ridiculously long list of things that a human can do, spanning the entire spectrum of possible stuff, and I'm just not going to list them all here* Human's should be generalists, specialization is for insects.

Jorg Ancrath, the main character of the Broken Empire series of novels has a huge number of wonderful quotes on all sorts of topics.
'Hate will keep you alive where love fails'

'Lucifer spoke thus. Pride took him from heaven, though he sat at God's right hand.' Her voice grew faint, the hint of a whisper. 'In the end pride is the only evil, the root of all sins.'
'Pride is all I have.'

'Father Gomst will pray for your soul,' I said. 'And forgive me the sins I incur in detaching it from your body.'

He's basically the study case for how to make a likable evil protagonist. He murders countless people- his family, his friends, in one case he even destroys an entire country because he can- but he pulls it off with such style that you can't help but like him. He also always has a philosophical musing on the nature of man to follow one of his evil deeds, which helps.

Oh yes, very fine work, thinking. But it is also the greatest bolt hole and escape-hatch of our time. It's supposed to excuse everything.... "i think this.. I thought that.. you haven't really thought about it... think for god's sake....The thinking of the meeting (or the committee or god help us the symposium) was that... )" but so much of this thinking is just mental masturbation, not intented to beget anything.... so you are weak in feeling, eh? I wonder why?
-beacuase of Dr von Haller, I can tell you. in my life feeling has not been very handsomely rewarded. It has hurt like hell.
-nothing unusual then that. it always does but you could try. Do you remember the fairy-tale about the boy who couldn't shudder and was so proud of it? nobody much likes shuddering, but it's better than existing without it, I can assure you."

"I don't want to be a hero
So? isn't everybody who is triumphantly the hero of his own romance, and when we meet one he's is likely to be a fascinating monster, like my dear old Eisenstein. But just because you are not a raoring egotist you needn't fall for the fashionable modern twaddle of the anti-hero and the mni-soul. That is what we might call the shadow of democracy; it makes it so laudable, so cosy and right and easy to be a spiritual runt and lean on all the other runts for support and applause in a splendid apotheosis of runtdom. thinking runt, of course- oh yes thinking away as hard as a runt can without getting into danger. But there are heroes still. the modern hero is the man who conquers in the inner struggle. how do you kno you aren't that kind of hero"

"it is true. But it's equally true to say "odin is here and loki is now. the heroic world is all arround us, waiting to be known"

"man is a noble animal, Davey. not a good animal; a noble animal. you ditinguish betwee nthe two? yes, you-you lwayer i do"

I want to see how obscure my text is.
It's all from Canadian novelists, I've transcribed them myself.
If anyone is willing to guess where this is from please, feel free.

Spec Ops: The Line. The whole ending is a big punch on the stomach, but one line sums it all up.

The truth, Walker, is that you're here because you wanted to feel like something you're not: A hero.

"Well, Art is Art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water. And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now you tell me what you know."

~Groucho Marx
