I've recently been getting into Superman, after watching the first two Superman films. So what are the best Superman comics to buy?

Do you want to read golden age superman or more current superman?
In any case:

"Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?"- by Alan Moore is a good read, but you might want to read up on Crisis on inftine earths beforehand.

I don't mind, really, as long as it's good. I've heard of The Man of Steel 1986 limited series by John Byrne. Do you know if that's good?

All-star Superman is one I've heard MANY good things about. I've only seen the animated movie based on it (which was still pretty good), but it sounds worth a read. AND it's self contained, so you don't need any supplemental reading to fully understand it.

As long as you know the basic mythology of Superman, All-Star Superman is excllent.

Superman: Secret identity is about a kid in the real world whose name is Clark Kent, and after a while he develops superpowers just like Superman. Very well-written, and completely stand-alone. The only reason not to read it is if you're only looking or stuff with the real Superman as the main character.

Superman: Up, up and away is easy to get into even if you haven't read any other Superman comics. Just like Secret Identity, it's by Kurt Busiek.

Superman: Red Son is an alternate version of him: What if his rocket landed in Soviet Russia instead of the USA? Not my favorite Superman comic ever, but good.

I second this as I had watched the animated film first (which the film is excellent) and the local library had a copy of the book which I had borrowed.

They are almost the exact copies to each other (the style match up) however a few changes had been made in the film mainly some of the stoires from the book were not present in the film which I guess it was due to time restraint (like the Bizarro, Jimmy temporary owner and the other Krytons in that jar stories).

Mark Waid and Alex Ross's Kingdom Come is The Big One, at least for me. It forces Superman to examine his entire world view as the planet he struggled for decades to protect begins to rip itself apart at the seams. It's bloody great.

All-Star Superman if you want to see how the character should be written. The only problem with reading that first is that almost every other Superman story you read will be crap in comparison.

Also if you feel like going for something different Superman: Red Son is a great story about communist Superman. Its awesome.
