Best survival games with female protagonists?

By survival games I do not mean classic survival horror games, like Silent Hill.

There's a flood of other survival games, mostly about zombie-infested areas and people having to survive in post-apocalyptic environment. Left 4 Dead, State of Decay, The War of Mine, etc.

I missed out on the trend, now I want to play something like that. But I'm faced with a problem that the info on availability of female protagonist or gender choice isn't easily accessible. So could you suggest me a few good games to choose from?

Any genre, from shooters to tactical rpgs, and I'd greatly prefer the latter. The only games I don't want are online ones or those that require co-op. Thanks!

Well, that's challenging. A lot of survival games (that I know of) were built around the idea of co-op and online. I mean, plenty of them use games like Minecraft, DayZ, and Left4Dead as a basis, and all of those were either exclusively online or seriously helped by their online and/or co-op.

Anyways, I haven't played This War of Mine yet (own it, still looking for time to play it), but from what I've seen, some of the playable characters can be female, though they don't seem to be a "protagonist" in the traditional sense. Beyond that, though, I haven't seen one that has a female protagonist, no online or focus on co-op,[footnote]Technically, games like Left4Dead can be played singleplayer, but having tried that, it isn't worth it. The games are only fun for co-op[/footnote] and is of any quality to recommend.

But basically, if you aren't big on online or co-op, then this is a trend that probably isn't for you. This is especially the case when a lot of the games with female protagonists have one largely to fill in the "this is who that one guy's girlfriend plays as" character for co-op games.

If i remember correctly, lost in blue let's you choose a guy or a girl at the start of the game. I only played the first on the DS.

I also vaguely remember another Survival game on the game boy. I can't for the life of me remember the name of game.

Edit: i googled it. It may be survival kids.

It was probably Survival Kids, which was available as Stranded Kids in Japan and Europe. Great little game.

The Lost in Blue series (there's also an installment for the Wii but it kinda sucks thanks to awkward controls) is the same series under a different name. Personally, I like the first one best. The limitations of the Game Boy (Color) forced it to be have a simple and streamlined designed and that works well for this game.

I'm not really into the genre but I can say that in This War of Mine, there are a number of preset characters, several of which are female, and at the beginning of each game you get 3 of them at random. They all have different skills and traits, though if your really lucky, you'll start out with one sick and no medication, so making sure the sick guy doesn't get worse and die will take up a bunch of your time.

And that's before winter sets in.

Rebuild 3
The long Dark.

Searching for them on steam also provides a list of games that would fit

You mentioned State of Decay, and in that there isn't really a protagonist, you play as any of your survivors you want to regardless of race or sex.

I was just about to say that. I'm not sure if Maya or any of the other females count as protagonists any more than the literally random dudes you find along the way.
Still an absolutely great game. I'm stupid addicted to it right now.

Skyrim with a female player character and tons of survival/hardmode/realism mods?

There are mods out there, where you can freeze to death and therefore you have to build a camp during night and hide during blizzards. Other mods give you needs like eating and drinking or make the combat difficult.

Dead State lets you make a female character (it's the default in fact). Plus that's a tactical turn based group RPG from the creators of Fallout and Arcanum.

This. The game is amazing though still a work in progress. The female character is voiced by Jennifer Hale

Thanks, guys, I'll check your suggestions out!

(For those asking, Skyrim and Silent Hill 3 are no match, I've played those and they're RPG and horror respectively, rather than strictly "survival" games. I know I'm making an arbitrary distinction, especially between horror and survival, which tend to merge into one genre, but I hope it's clear what I'm trying to say)

P.S. I know it's a bit off-topic, but can somehow please drop a few lines explaining how to subscribe to a topic in this forum to get email notifications? I wasn't reading this thread until now, because I thought noone replied to it...

Dictating people what to want comes off pretty rude, indeed. That's my wish and that's it.

Now I remember that among suggestions above, I did stumble into Lost in Blue very long ago! There was only an option to play as a boy. According to wiki, in sequels you can start out as a girl. I didn't know that.

Genderless games are totally ok.

I'm going to see youtube let's plays to check out the rest of the games. That always works best to understand if the game is what you'd like to play.

Or there's female characters in "Don't Starve"
As far as I understand, they're not the protagonist, just sidekicks.

"7 Days to Die" is the best Zombie Apocalypse Survival game in my opinion. Bought it at the Steam Summer Sale and already put 110 hours into it. You can play as a male or female survivor, either in a random created single player world or on multiplayer servers with other players. Me and my friends run a private server and playing strictly PVE, just keeping exploring, defending our selfbuild base from nighlty zombie hordes and crafting/building stuff. A lot of fun.
