Everybody knows the expression "the best thing since sliced bread" , but what do you think was the best thing before that? ..or even what expression do you think was used instead ?

Edit: Also , what DO you think is the best thing since sliced bread ?

I don't think there was a saying before that.

The best thing? I really don't know.

A knife? How else would the bread get sliced?
But without the bread there would be nothing to slice!
Hmm, point taken. Bread is pretty old, so I guess before that would be "Best thing since the invention of fire" ?

You can actually trace the connection here

sliced bread>knife>bread>fire>????

But I must say there simply got to be some revolutionary things in between

By the way: In that expression, are they talking about bread that you buy sliced from the store?
Because in my opinion pre-sliced bread is dry and horrible. I slice all my bread by knife.

It had to be air holes in houses. People were dropping like flies in their sleep, then some genius realized "Hey, if we let AIR get in, they won't suffocate!"
He was promptly taken to the sanatorium, chained up to the wall, and "treated" for his madness. But he set the ball rolling.

What about the animals? I would suspect that it was originally "the best thing since fire"...or "the wheel".

What about the wheel? Or discovering how to ride horseback? Those saved a lot of time and effort. It's definitely easier to hunt on horseback than foot, at least when it comes to chasing.

I like unsliced bread much more than sliced. Moist stays in longer and crust is better.
