Sorry to seem like I'm excluding people, but this one is just for the British folks, as it focuses on the UK (for whatever reason, other than that I just live here and know it well). Who do you think are the best British female role models, or best female role models living in Britain? Personally, J.K. Rowling has always been one for me, because I'm a writer, but a close second is Rachel Riley, who is as intelligent as she is beautiful (seriously, some of those maths puzzles on Countdown; I'm just like "WTF, how'd she get it that fast?").

How about you?

Probably Emma Thompson. She seems pleasant, dignified and intelligent.

You're clearly not much into books if you think Rowling is a role model. All she's written is Potter, which was great don't get me wrong but, that's it.

As to the question, I don't know. I'm not a female so I have no idea what a good role model for one is, generally the whole wanting to screw them clouds the issue too much.

Do you mean role model as in lifestyle? Because if so, what's JK Rowling done to be such a role model? Write famous books? Woop de doo, every single famous author has managed that. Her lifestyle isn't particularly notable for being good or bad.
Of course Emma Watson should be on the list, she's well known for trying to be a good girl (although slipping up at times) I'm not female though so don't quote me on that.

Not to mention she's making up for lost time leeching every penny's worth from it... and other literarily questionable forays... :/

OT: Dr Alice Roberts... a new-agey polymath light... fairly certain she has at least two PhD's and an MBBS... or something approaching that.

Well, that and those other books she has written. However, those are supposed to be crap, she apparently decided to go "adult" in the worst way, though I've not read them myself.

And, IIRC, a supporter either of Polanski, or some other celebrity rapist.

Wait, what? Polanski as in Roman Polanski the filmmaker? Or someone else? Or did he rape someone? I'm really confused.
Yep, yep, and yep, a 13 year old.

Well, 'allegedly'.

He had sex with a minor in the 70s. I don't know how concensual it was but it's still illegal.

That came as a surprise. Where did you read that?

She signed a petition for his release back in 2009? 2010? To her credit she did subsequently remove it after suffering the media backlash. Whether she removed it because she genuinely changed her mind or just didn't want her career tarnished is another matter entirely. But yes, at least briefly, she did support him.

He did a bunk from the US in the late 70s and hasn't been back since. The US did try to extradite him from Switzerland five or so years ago but he moved to back to France. The guy basically got 13 year old high in a hot tub then had sex with her.

Oh. Well, I won't hold it against her. I don't know the details of the Polanski controversy. Thompson removed her name in the end, I've read, after having a short conversation with a student at Exeter university.

The petition to release Polanski, according to the Telegraph website, "has 164 signatures so far, many of them by big names including Jeremy Irons, Natalie Portman, Salman Rushdie, Sam Mendes, Kristin Scott Thomas, Harrison Ford and Isabelle Huppert."

I can't believe this very well known female individual hasn't been mentioned yet:

Her Majesty has reigned with grace and nobility for over sixty years, consistently remaining above politics and thus the perfect head of state. Even at the age of 87, she's still working her full-time job without a single complaint. There are very few British women of our age who have such a long and unblemished record of duty to their country, so I believe she is among the best of our role-models. God save the Queen!

Please don't assume things. I am into books; it's just that Rowling is an author that had a profound impact on me when I was younger, and when I read her Harry Potter series, I realized that I wanted to write books of a similar theme and quality. Also, one series made her that popular and rich. It's not about quantity; it's quality.

Careful on that road fella, Twilight lives there too.

But yeah, apologies for casting doubts towards you, it was more of a dig at her than yourself.

No worries. But yeah, you get my point anyway.

Well, she did donate so much to charity that she actually got downgraded from a billionaire to the millionaire.

Helen Mirren Because I still would. And she's an awesome talent that has never failed to impress every time I have seem her be interviewed.

Emma Thompson I would say, she seems like a decent person....

Carol Vordermann for making math and engineering nerds have sex appeal.

Hmmm that's about it from what I can see from over here.

Of course Ireland is not much better. We've fuck-all female role models.
