Best Videogame Protagonists/Antagonists

This topic has probably been done to death, but still, I'm curious. I'd like to see lists of you guys' top 5 video-game protagonists.
Now, there's one criteria. I want your lists to be comprised of heroes that actually have unique personalities, conflicts, motivations, etc. of their own. Try to avoid player-surrogates like Gordon Freeman (as tempting as he may be) or boring ones like Mario/Sonic or anyone like that.

Well I absolutely adore Hazama from the BlazBlue games. Let's just say that his entire existence depends on him trolling people 24/7. He will actually cease to exist the moment people stop hating him.

He breaks Tsubaki's will in half the once just because she was unlucky enough to be in a conversation with him and he got bored.

All he has in the way of weapons and armour is a badass black suit, a matching sweet hat, a couple of concealed pocket knives and his Snake Whip Thing. In a universe of pistols, gunblades, war marionettes, power fists and swords and he's the most powerful fighter in the canon.

Oh and I really like Mu-12 for some reason. Her absolute 100% perfect, cold hatred of everything and everyone including her own existence is surprisingly refreshing.

As for protagonists, I like Hisao from Katawa Shoujo a lot more than I thought I would. He's just as well written as the actual routes.

Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2. He is one of the few bad guys that I had a genuine hatred for during the game because of two of his actions (if you've played it you'll know what I mean). I was fine with him but after the first real interference to the vault hunters I wanted to kill him for what he did.
