Pick one with the best Original Soundtrack (OST) (with songs made specifically for that game) and one with the best collection of liscensed songs (games like: Rock Band, Guitar Hero, etc.)

OST: Mad World
I usually don't like most modern rap but the death rap in the game really gets me pumped I even sought it out to put on my mp3 player

Don't tell me that neither of these songs get you pumped (My 2 favorite tracks from the game):
"Ride"

"Look Pimpin'" (Final boss theme)

Collection of liscensed songs: Brutal Legend
Nothing can beat all of that classic metal...it's a real shame that game didn't do better =(

My favorite OST is Final Fantasy X. Nothing else really comes close to that for me.

The best licensed soundtrack that comes to mind is Tony Hawks: American Wasteland, but that's really the only one I can think of.

Prince of Persia 4: It is absolutely the most "beautiful" music I have ever listened to in a game.

FO3, DA:O, Guild Wars, and ME1 also have some excellent pieces.

As a side note, Halo 3 has one of the best soundtracks for a shooter.

The Hitman series has one of the best scores I've ever heard in a game franchise.

My personal favorite would probably have to be this (epic) little number from Hitman 2: Silent Assassin.

00:49 gets me every time.

One of my favourite scores at the moment is Noel's character theme from BlazBlue.

There are other awesome character themes, like Litchi's or Ragna's, but Noel's is my favourite

..............................Why is it so hard to use the searchbar?

I don't really think there is any one "best gaming music", because such a thing is incredibly subjective. For example, many have mentioned Still Alive from Portal, yet I absolutely loathe that song. Meanwhile I praise the other piece of the Portal soundtrack which go largely unnoticed by others. So I guess this thread is essentially a "favorite game music" thread, and I will respond appropriately. Though personally I don't even have a single piece of favorite gaming music since there are so many different ones that mean different things to me.

However this is one of my personal favorites. It's a very immersive piece from both of the Half-Life games. During the first game it played during the tram ride into the heart of the facility. The time at which nothing was going wrong and you may have forgotten that the game was supposed to be about a physicist bludgeoning aliens to death with a crowbar. It really eased you into the game and helped you to assume the role of Gordon Freeman. In the second game, it plays when you acquire the gravity gun in the scrap yard with Alex. And that's what I find to be special about this song. During both games, it plays in the only two area that could truly be considered "safe". It invokes a feeling of calmness that is experienced exclusively in these two areas, a time in which you weren't being told to hurry along to the next destination. The music is used to create a very special moment of nostalgia for the player as they think back to the very beginning of it all.

The area this song plays in is very different from the above. In Half-Life, this song plays inside a teleporation room in Xen, while in Half-Life 2 it plays in the flooded basement of Nova Prospekt. Despite both of these areas being in the heart of enemy territory, this song also invokes a feeling of calmness. You know that you are still in danger, yet these places feel relatively safe. A calm during the middle of the storm.

These two songs invoke feelings that contrast with the overall oppressive feeling of the rest of the game, hence why they are memorable to me. This at least how I felt when listening to them. I imagine people had different responses to these songs than I did.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Because I am a child of the eighties I could play that game for hours just cruising around in my Sandking playing the radio and killing pedestrians.

The soundtrack for Echoes always keeps me playing for hours, and at times waiting in one spot to just listen to it.

The one that got me every time was the Torvus Bog music.

Here's five of my many, many favorites:

Unlimited SaGa
The Last Remnant
Final Fantasy X
Valkyrie Profile 2
Ninja Blade (I actually don't like most of this game's soundtrack, but it has one of the most adrenaline inducing boss themes of all time!!!)

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Final Fantasy VIII had some great game music along with Shadow Hearts II: Covenant

For licensed Game Music I guess Gran Turismo series.

The Wind Waker OST was a work of art.

And so is the Super Mario Galaxy 2 OST.

And I don't much care for non original compositions in games.

One thing you have to give Nintendo credit for is that despite all the garbage 3rd party games they release, their oldest franchises (Legend of Zelda, Metroid) are always excellent in almost every area. Metroid especially has always had great music that fit the mood of the game.

Silent Hill knows the kind of music I like: soft, sort of depressing, and when they do sing the songs are meaningful and thoughtful.

FF7 had great music, especially the end boss fight music which you could reuse for anything and it would sound awesome.

Max Payne had a sound track that set the mood for the whole game and for the sorrow and pain Max felt everyday of his life.
