Now I love learning shit, and I love the man in question and I'm one episode in and I'm digging it.

That said, I really don't feel the tone of the show is going to work for the audience he's trying to reach. Ya know the ignorant and uneducated. It feels very much like a show thats pointed at the choir of coastal liberal millennials (of which I count myself as one)

If they did the season 2, I would like them to drop the live audience, because they don't come across genuine at all and they were trying to be like Dr. Oz type show.

Point is, I dig it, but I don't think Bill's gonna reach the audience he needs to enlighten.

But what say you peoples of Escapist?

Update: The 2nd episode has a "Dear White People" speech about appropriating eastern religions, because I guess you can't follow the Tao if your white.

Fucking Aye.

It sounds really interesting. Sadly, a lot of Bill's work like this seems to fall on deaf ears. It's not for a lack of trying on his part; it's due to the people he wants to reach not wanting to be reached. I don't think there is a possible tone that he could take with a show that would actually get the people who need to learn the information provided to watch.

Not having seen it, but Eastern religions, in general, are badly misappropriated in the West. Instead of being followed as a theology or philosophy, they're given the same level of respect as horoscopes or Eastern languages such as people getting the Chinese character for "fish" tattooed onto themselves with no idea of what it means.

agreed with your first point, but the whole thing is just dripping with everything the right hates about the left, with celebrities, and the talking down. It's basically everything I hate about the west coast rolled up into a show. If I wasn't already endeared to the man himself, I'd probably hate it too.

also, Re; Dear White People, to be fair the point it was trying to make was that white people shouldn't use the buddah to push their new age alternative medicine on unwitting buyers. THe offense I take was that it was structured as a "Dear White People" thing, as if only white people are the ones peddling their new age alternative medicines.

also kinda pissed me off as a taoist, but only following it very loosely it probably isn't my place to be offended about that.

To be fair, I don't think I've ever seen a single person of color in Pier One, and their entire aisle of fake Buddha statues, Buddha heads and other vague eastern knick knacks for middle aged white soccer moms to put in their gardens
I mean... I don't know how to respond other than that I've never been in pier one either, but that's because I'm poor as shit.

Wouldn't be the first time another religion's stuff has been used for the "cool factor." Anyone actualy know what a witch doctor does other then where a funny wooden mask, make zombies, and sacrifice chickens? Withhout googling it or going on wikipedia? Me Neither, but most of us have appropriated bits here or there because either it would be alarming to magority (I.E. White) sensabilites here in the the US at least, and add in some extra flavor for when the magic starts.

Heck, anyone watch clasic anime? Neon Genesis Evangeline anyone? Most of the Christian iconography (Angels, Lilith, Magi, Adam, Evangeline, ect), and even the Jewish Sephiroth in the movie were all used more or less because of the cool factor simalar to Voodoo is in the US in most of our media.

And Speaking of our one winged angel...and the part of it that is the Tifa...

Once an acquaintance showed off the tattoos he had gotten in Hong Kong. It was an ancient Chinese proverb, he said and asked me exactly what it meant. I was torn with inventing something off the top of my head or telling him the truth. That the tattoo artist had pranked the poor, gullible tourist by writing down "half duck eight dollars, whole duck fifteen dollars".
