I've always wanted to do a Bioshock review, and with Bioshock 2 just on the horizon, I thought that I would do a review over the original. Of course, Bioshock came out in 2007, 2008 for the ps3. And being an avid ps3 gamer, I got it for the ps3, and so without further ado let me begin.
First off, let me say that the Demo, could have possible been one of the absolute best demos I have ever played. It immersed you into the world enough for you to have a taste, and yet leaving enough unsaid for you to run to your nearest Gamestop, and kill whoever is in your way to get it. To give you a better taste of the plasmids would have helped but other than that, it was quite good.
A major problem that I had with the game overall was that it was suposedly a FPS RPG, but its not really an RPG, you can get every weapon, and almost all of the plasmids. You can be the Ice, Fire, and Electric guy all at the same time, not to mention the Telekinesis, Cyclone... well you get the picture. Even if you saved every little sister, you got enough ADAM to get pretty much everything you want. And even though I havent ever harvested them, (morals and all) the thought of having that much extra ADAM makes me think the game would become so terribly easy that it wouldnt even be funny.
Enemies was another major problem I had, the diversity of the enemies was remarkably weak. there were 5 kinds of splicers, and all were easy as hell to kill, well other than the Houdini Splicers, who could be as annoying as hell unresearched because they disappear so friggin fast. But at least they were different and out there, and gave a semi challenge. The Big Daddy's were other enemies that were so easy to kill. even on survivor mode, which greatly increased the strength of these behemoths, after about Neptunes Bounty, they became so easy, that I found myself often not even saving and killing ones that didnt even have little sisters, just for kicks and giggles. There were only really two kinds of big daddy's, Bouncers, and Rosies. 2K could have taken this much further, and diversified the big daddy's. This would have made things much harder in my opinion.
Scare factor. Your the only sane person in a friggin city at the bottom of the friggin sea. How hard would it be to make it scary? Answer: NOT AT ALL. I am not someone who regurally plays scary games, in fact I am easily scared. For some unknown reason, 2K apparentaly forgot somewhere along the line they were making a survival HORROR, and just made a survival game. There are about 2 scary parts throughout the game, the secound of which was a cheap turn off the lights, knock things down around you kinda thing. The only real scary part was when you enter a room, and push a button, which opens downstairs, you go and upgrade your gun, turn around, fight a splicer, then head upstairs. Once upstairs you notice that OH SHIT all the splicer statues just FRIGGIN DISAPEARED! Which I'll admit made me jump out of my seat.
For a survival game, it isnt really that hard to survive, you trip over first aid kits, food, and ammo everywhere you go. Not to mention enemies drop guns full of ammo, and have pockets full of money for you to take. Survivor mode greatly restricts this, and actually makes the game hard.
Boss. The final battle. What can I say? EASY. even on Survivor, it was so easy, i found myself laughing as he screamed and I hit him with my wrench, and nothing but. Good times.
Good points. The great points of Bioshock was that it had an emersive atmosphere. it had an AWESOME, and EMENSLY AWESOME story. This almost made up for its other problems. In my mind Bioshock was more of an interactive book more than an actual horror game. If I were to grade bioshock I'd give it an A for effort, a -B for Appearance, and a... whats above A? for plot. I give Bioshock a 9/10. 2K has alot of work to make Bioshock 2 live up to its predecesor. I wish them good luck with that.
