We have all played games set in fantastical medieval periods, with your wizard, knight, and rogue class one with his staff, his sword, and his bow coming from either dwarf, human, or elvish decent. But what if we put all those fantasy elements and races into a different, more or less modern, time. Personally, I would be interested in a Victorian fantasy role playing game. What period would you like fantasized? What classes would it have? Would their be races like elves or dwarves?

I've always liked modern fantasy.

Dresden Files, X/1999, Sailor Moon, Mai Hime....

Technically speaking, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, although that was more modern action/horror.

I believe they already have Victorian fantasy games, that go by the name Steampunk. Such as the earlier FF games (and 9) which have that kind of 19th Century technology in the setting.

I too am a proponent of the Dresden Files. It always delights me when X fairy tale monster appears and "Yeah, they're real, but they don't just take children from cribs, they speculate on the stock market too!"

A Victorian sci-fi RPG would be awesome.

There probably is some out there, I just haven't heard of them yet.

a sort-off cyberpunk RPG game where magic is only usable in cyber space it would have classes like "gunner" "brawler" "hacker" "rogue" etc. all with different areas of expertise (for example a brawler would be better at un-armed/melee fights and a hacker would suck at fighting and would focus on technology)
PS
or maybe something like Deus Ex crossed with the freedom of The Elder scrolls games and more cyberpunk elements (like Cyberspace)

I can't think of any, the closest I can come up with is Bioshock: Infinite, but that would be an awesome game if one is out there.

How about Industrial Revolution era [http://www.guildwars2.com/en/]?

Or maybe Modern times [http://www.thesecretworld.com/]?

What about the distant past/future [http://www.swtor.com/]?

*sigh* Sadly, no such games exist... heh.

We too, it works pretty well. Gives you a solid base to draw from, while still allowing for variety within it.

For example, Elder Scrolls has many variants of elves and Dwarfs/Dwemer are basically extinct.

E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy[footnote]http://eye.streumon-studio.com/[/footnote], i'd suggest checking youtube for more gameplay vids.

Personally (this is a bit specific, but), i would like to see a FPS/RPG set in Vietnam, except instead of your ol' Vietnam, this is a psychedelic-version of it, with weird occurrences and phenomena. Maybe you could play a soldier who's list his mind and has to reclaim it. All the visuals would be surreal and just "off", such as streets that seem to stretch on forever and people without eyes.

I don't know, just a thought.

Like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in Asia.

I think a pre-Columbian America would make a pretty interesting fantasy setting, especially if you could get inventive enough with the lore and have winged serpents and thunderbirds flying around for you to fight.

Prince of Persia is really the only game I know of that taps into Persian-type fantasy, and there's really a lot of stuff that could be done with that.

TES does a really good job of taking fantasy and doing interesting things with it. Except not so much in Oblivion, since their lore writer was conspicuously absent then. But they do a lot of seriously interesting things--like how every region has their own variations on gods, so that you never really get the 'real' version of the pantheon, just an interpretation. Or how there are characters which can reach transcendence and break the fourth wall, realizing that they're fictional characters and even using the game mechanics themselves.

They're a good example of how you can use worldbuilding to create an interesting setting. Which, sadly, doesn't often happen when it comes to medieval fantasy, which is why people are tired of it. Using shallow versions of tropes from works by Tolkien so that you don't have to do worldbuilding is like the ultimate irony, seeing how much work went into creating Middle-Earth.

There's a series of books - the Mythago Cycle - and they're about an ancient woodland forest in which the creatures of the imagination take shape. Literally. It's set in WW2 era Britain, and it's a genuinely good read. That's, imo, a good example of modern fantasy, and I think that it could be adapted well to an RPG. You might have characters from the relatively modern world wandering in, partying up, and exploring the wonders of the forest.

Cyberpunk? Wait... already done [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun]. That would be my application of choice, though.

Also, that misspelling of "fantasy" in the thread title is maddening. "Fanatasy"? Is that like fantastical fanaticism?

What about dinosaur fantasy? You would get to choose your race and specialty based on dinosaurs!! You could be flying around in a prehistoric jungle as a pterodactyl fighting a T-rex!

Until Dr. McNinja [http://drmcninja.com/archives/comic/21p23] kills you and turns you into a makeshift hang glider/tow kite, anyway.

The Nightwatch series by Sergei Lukyanenko are really great books. The movie is still good but it went in a way different direction. I would love to see a game based on that universe's lore and character types. As long as they didn't try to emulate the story of the books.
